The Douglas A-1 Skyraider (formerly designated AD before the 1962 unification of Navy and Air Force designations) is an American single-seat attack aircraft in service from 1946 to the early 1980s, which served during the Korean War and Vietnam War. The Skyraider had an unusually long career, remaining in frontline service well into the Jet Age (when most piston-engine attack or fighter aircraft were replaced by jet aircraft); thus becoming known by some as an "anachronism".[2][3] The aircraft was nicknamed "Spad", after the French World War I fighter.

It was operated by the United States Navy (USN), the United States Marine Corps (USMC), and the United States Air Force (USAF), and also saw service with the British Royal Navy, the French Air Force, the Republic of Vietnam Air Force (RVNAF), and others. It remained in US service until the early 1970s.

Ahh that thing was mean in its day.

Darth, do you look at old photos and see where the machines typically had wear marks or does the kit have something to go by?

Typically, the instructions only include painting instructions. You can sometimes get some weathering ideas from the box art. But old photos, or photos of other’s builds are most useful.

Thanks. This one was really fun to build. Tamiya also makes a Navy Skyraider. I’m going to have to get one to add to my stash.

Imagine being in a field in Nam, looking up and seeing that coming at you?

Great work, Darth.

Yeah. The Skyraider was an absolute beast of an airplane. It was used by the Air Force and Navy both. As I mentioned before, Tamiya makes a Navy version of this kit that I plan to get as soon as possible. I highly doubt it, but I’d love it if that kit comes with a toilet….

The A-1 had one air-to-air victory against a Mig-17 over Vietnam. Nice model

Damn. That is impressive for a huge single engine piston driven aircraft.

These are most wholesome and guiless threads ever. What soulless dead on the inside sick fricks would ever downvote. May all four of you rot in eternal hell.

My grandfather was a Skyraider pilot (as well as a Corsair and SBD pilot). The Skyraider is what inspired the A-10. In addition to all of the bombs and/or rockets, it had four 20mm cannons. Serious bad news.

Incredible detail! Do you purchase all your model kits online or hit local hobby shops? I’ve heard of Tamiya, but what are some other quality brands that you buy?

I order some on Amazon. I also buy a lot at model shows, or my sorta-local model shop. But my favorite way to get them is to take a day trip (we call it galavanting) to different towns that have model shops and buy kits there. Kennesaw, GA is a great example. It’s about a two hour dive and they have what may be the best hobby shop in the Southeast. Memphis is good as well. Also, when I travel for business, I’ll check to see if where I’m going takes me close to any hobby shops.

Tamiya is my absolute favorite. I also like Meng, Academy, Italeri, and Airfix. I also build Trumpeter and Dragon. But I’d not recommend those unless you’re an experienced modeler.
