Time to plant trees?

I want to get rid (I know its a pain in the arse) of a crepe myrtle tree and plant a red maple in its place. Is now a good time to do it or am I too late and need to wait until after summer?

Not too late but getting close

Tree planting time depends on your location. When was Arbor Day in your town? That’s usually a good indicator. But, the answer is yes. Do it now.
I wouldn’t plant a maple within 20’ or more of your house. I know some people plant crepe myrtles closer than that

Not too late , December would have been better but now is better than 3 weeks from now.

Good luck. I hacked one down to the ground in 2023. I drilled holes in the stump and I put glyphosphate in them every couple of months. I still have crepe myrtles popping up all over my yard

I'm in Ponchatoula, and google says it was the 3rd Friday of January

I usually end up buying in the spring, growing in pots until the fall and then plant. I just seem to find a better selection of trees.

that’s what I usually do but this year I was determined to get some trees planted. I just counted I planted over 50 trees since January, dug the last holes today
that will be it for a good long while

I’m trying apples again, hehehe. A poster on another forum assured me if I planted a dolgo crabapple along with a rusty coat and cauley apple, I’d be giving away apples in seven years. We shall see.

I planted 5 crabapples with that in mind. I’ll either plant the real apples around them once they get established or try and graft on some apple to them. We will see but yes they are supposed to be a supercharger for pollinators

I was told to only order MM111 semi dwarf rootstock also. The others tend to need support or trellises IF they would even survive cedar apple rust?

I have read that as well. There was an apple tree growing at my house when I bought it I think it made 4 apples in ten years, then died

I tried 2 Anna’s, 2 gala’s, a Fuji, a golden dorsett, an Arkansas black and a tropic joy or some kind of Florida apple before and CAR usually took them out. I even tried a Liberty and Enterprise even though I knew we didn’t have enough chill hours. If this Cauley and rusty coat along with the pollinator dolgo doesn’t work, I’ll settle on fig and satsuma to satisfy my fruit tree addiction.

quote:well gala/fuji/ark black you had no chance LOL. Good luck and let us know how it goes. I’m definitely right behind you next year assuming my crabapples flower
