Baton Rouge - Kindergartener brings loaded gun to school, mother arrested

BATON ROUGE — Administrators at Baton Rouge Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet School called the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office (ERBSO) school drug task force this morning after they found a handgun inside a kindergarten student’s backpack.

EBRSO said that this morning, a kindergarten student showed another child the gun that was inside her backpack. A student who saw the gun told a teacher, who then checked the backpack and notified administrators. School administration then called EBRSO.

When deputies arrived at the school, they found a pink Glock 9mm handgun containing 10 rounds of ammunition. During the investigation, the student told school staff that her mother put the gun in her backpack.

Nobody was injured in the incident, according to EBRSO.

Deputies talked to her mother, 36-year-old Vannicea McCray, who admitted that it is her firearm. She said while they were getting ready to leave for school, she put the gun on the side of her daughter’s backpack and failed to remove it before she left for school.

McCray was arrested and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Louisiana DCFS was notified and responded to the scene regarding the child’s welfare.
