Sony reportedly scaling back PC ports for PlayStation exclusives

Sony has reportedly decided to pull back from releasing PlayStation 5 exclusives on PC.
Sources "familiar with the company's plans" told Bloomberg that PS5 games have not sold well on the platform. They also said PC ports "risk damaging the console's brand and could hurt sales of the PS5 and its successors."
A spokesperson for PlayStation declined to provide comment to Bloomberg.
Online games, including Marathon and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, are still expected to launch across multiple platforms.

That's the actual issue. Though the reality is that ship has sailed. Consoles are too expensive for non-console people to justify buying them for a small handful of exclusive games over the course of the console's life cycle. People who want to buy a PS are going to buy one; those of us on PC who were willing to overpay for old games are just going to play the 99% of games that aren't PS exclusives instead.

In the grand scheme I wont miss ha I no access to most of their exclusives.
I would have liked to get a hold of Saros at some point, but oh well.

it could work out for them though. if the RAM issue doesnt get sorted out PC might not be an affordable option for most people. A still expensive but probably much cheaper option would be a console. With xbox all but flatlined, that puts Sony in position as the only option for a "mature audience" which nintendo largely has failed to a capture.

Damn this sucks.
Just bought God of War for 20 bucks on PC. Already have both Horizon games in my backlog ready to go and I plan to buy Ragnorok.
Getting these single player games for cheap a year or so after they're out on PS has been awesome.

I'm not so sure. While Sony can obviously get cheaper ram than the consumer due to economies of scale, they aren't immune to price increases. Most people need a computer; no one needs a gaming console. As the average PC has gotten more powerful, it has opened up the overwhelming majority of games ever released as playable options, even on "non-gaming" PCs. We'll see who breaks first as consoles start to flirt with $1k.

Pc games sell a lot of games to people without gaming computers.
Games like GTA, Madden, NBA 2K sales are dominated by consoles.
Last report i can find it 14% of GTA V sales were PC.

While I'm not contesting what you're saying, I'm not sure how it's responsive to what I said. Most people need a computer; no one needs a gaming console. As both PCs and consoles continue to get more expensive, I'll be curious to see what percentage of people will either forgo a PC to buy a console or continue to buy both. I don't know that's going to play out in Sony's favor.

I think that I'll continue to buy consoles and play what I can still play on my PC until I'm forced to upgrade.
There aren't a ton of games you need a powerful computer for that aren't on console and I don't see that changing.
If you wanna run ultra graphics you gotta spend a ton so that market would shrink first if I have to guess
this is a crazy chart

But that was my point. I'm currently typing this on my travel/work laptop, which is a Surfacebook with a Snapdragon processor and no dedicated GPU. It's a lovely productivity machine, but from a gaming perspective, it's a piece of shite. Yet, it can play probably 85% of all PC games ever released, and 95% of every game released outside of the last half decade or so.
With that said, as I alluded to in my first post, you basically have three groups of people:
1. People who will buy a Playstation regardless.
2. People who will not buy a Playstation regardless.
3. People who wouldn't buy a Playstation if they could otherwise play PS games on their PC, but who will buy a Playstation if they can't.
I think Group 3 is vanishingly fricking small, especially with continued console price increases. Sony apparently thinks Group 3 is large, or at least large enough to offset the money they are passing on by not releasing PS games on PC. We'll see who's right.

I think this has more to do with that Xbox will play PC games thread. Maybe they won't let the exclusives hit Xbox/Pc.

Almost certainly. They wanted to put this news out before XBox announced their next system will play PC games.

Means nothing in the grand scheme of things. There hasn’t been a Sony Exclusive game worth a damn that’s come out in the last 5 years.
