Filing for bankruptcy
What would be a good place to replace the downtown location that would actually make me want to go

The Lafayette location in the early to mid 2000’s was awesome. Some of the best sushi around. The BR location was also good but I think they got away with decent enough sushi due to the rooftop ambiance. Lafayette location was always better in my opinion.

That’s a shame, makes me sad. I sure enjoyed a Big Tuna roll. Maybe, just maybe if they’d open earlier, they’d get a better/bigger lunch crowd?

The restaurants are still operating for now. The bankruptcy is part of the debt restructuring process. Happens all the time.

I guess I'd better use that gift card.

Back in the day, their sumo ribeye was fantastic.

Yes it was. Tons more competition for the sushi dollar since then.

Tsunami has gone downhill with the new owners. And the fact that they decided to open the one on Highland in that office building is mind-boggling.

The one on highland seems to do very well but no telling what they’re paying in rent.

I've been a lot of times since it opened due to convenience, and while I've seen staff overwhelmed, the restaurant has never been more than half full when I've been there.

Last time, it was a Friday lunch and we went because the other option that day didn't have an available parking spot due to being slammed. Walked into Tsunami, and nobody was in there.

Sushi wise, I think it is fine. It's not bad by any stretch, but nothing wows me either. Too spoiled by Umami on that front. I do like some of the random items, though: spicy kimchi collard greens, eggplant miso appetizer, pimp salad.

Leah Simon was the creative force behind Tsunami. She opened the Baton Rouge location first, when she moved back from Los Angeles where she worked for Elektra Records. She hired a designer from West Hollywood to do the rooftop interior at the Shaw Center in BR and it was very innovative at the time. She’s in the Pacific Northwest now, and I don’t know if her sister Michelle still has anything to do with Tsunami? Anyone know if they sold and when?

Leah was awesome an demanded everything be perfect at tsunami when it opened the BR location. We spent a lot of time with her downtown since she would come to the bars after tsunami would close. She sold her portion almost 15 years ago or so.

Michele and her husband sold their portion right after Covid. I think 2021.

I thought BR opened first.. Now that I think about it, I’d helped her with an issue she was having at the Shaw Center when Tsunami first opened, that’s how I learned she was back home and what she was doing. We’d been friends for years. When she worked at Elektra in New York her office was on 5th Avenue in Rockefeller Plaza. I worked for Hachette Publications on 6th Ave between 50th and 51st. I saw her quite a bit. She’s making big bank now.. she has a marijuana farm.

No. Lafayette opened first by a couple of of years.

Leah was much more involved with Baton Rouge than Michelle was.

Yes.. She moved from LA to open Tsunami BR. If I remember correctly she sent all her new sushi chefs to Los Angeles to train. Like you said, she wants everything according to her vision. She’s a force, that’s for sure.

I can take or leave Tsunami, but if we lose the best restaurant location in the city to yet another private event space, I'm going to riot.

In lafayette its still 2nd best imo. Maybe fish box is ahead now because of the price buts lots of people are just hire Hong or that other sushi caterer when they want to do sushi with a big group now
