This gets my vote (1976):
Soul was badly wounded by funk, but of course the fatal shot was fired by disco

Thee Sacred Souls are pretty recent and pretty good as well.

You can pick just about any Mayer Hawthorne song.

I wouldn't call that soul necessarily and that was 2003. This one is more soul and came out in 2013 (also check out his Black Sabbath Changes cover):

If you are going ATL rap, it has to be CeeLo Green 'frick You'.

Tell me you don't think that C Lo song is an excellent authentic top shelf soul song.

Hip hop not soul.
I agree that it has some Hip-hop elements, but to me, I think it leans more towards funk/soul.
I think it has some decent lyrics, nothing really vulgar at all. Great fun groove.
I always liked the song, back when it was on the radio.
I hadn't thought about the song in years, but Tuesday night, I went by a friends house and they had youtube on the TV, and this came on:
They didn't even realize that it was a cover, and said they had never heard the original.

Is it the one tv tried to brainwash the country into buying?

They're basically covering Obadiah Parker's version.
