West 6th near Buford’s at 2:00am…. Nothing good happens after 10:00pm.

I remember the good ol’ days when Austin was one of the cleanest, safest downtowns in the country.

The strategic part of it would be Buford’s (and basically every Austin bar) closes at 2, so people would generally be forced to exit at that time.

Truly an awful situation. Buford’s tends a mix of all races, but it’s nice enough that it’s the Bama bar on gamedays. Definitely one of the bars that people aren’t generally worried about going to.

Wow - 6th always felt safe. I was just in Cartagena, Colombia, staying on a street that felt like Bourbon, with people partying until 4am. The police presence (although most were about 17 years old) was very strong. I never felt uneasy.

Prayers to those killed and the wounded.

6th Street gets pretty dark after midnight. There’s a shooting or two there every year. The rest of downtown Austin (and most of the city) is safe for a city of its size.

This was on West 6th which is fratty and safe not “dirty” 6th which is trashy. So far more surprising.

We visited Cartagena about 5 years ago. We loved it. It felt like a clean and safe French Quarter.

6th street has transitioned to Mogadishu the last few years. Was there last year and was shocked at the transformation.

One thing is true though - the cops are on it in a heartbeat when there is an issue.

6th street absolutely sucked when I went 2-3 years ago. Will never go back.

it says 3 others are in critical condition, so potentially 5 casualties plus the gunman but there’s no identity yet or social media videos or accounts from the crime scene six hours later?

the lack of details on this are strange for such a big shooting at a tourist location in US

Not that I’m one to infer before certain details are revealed, but I’ve got a hunch or two what demographic the suspect belongs to.

Well, until Austin defunds them.

The first few times I went to Austin, I enjoyed it. The last few…not so much. It has changed a lot…and not for the better.

even so, with so many cellphones you would think there would be video or first hand accounts from someone near the scene

Played on 6th Street back in the 90’s, I always described it as a clean\safe Bourbon St.. I guess it’s Bourbon St after midnight now…
