Good to see the Trump admin abandon the libertarian myth of isolationism. The strength of the US comes from its ability to exert overwhelming force all over the globe. This reminds autocrats and terrorists who's in charge, and we won't stand for human rights violations and oppression.

Foreign policy has nothing to do with isolationism or exerting force all over the globe. History shows a wide variety of options. The Spartans exerted force and kept finding enemies while losing soldiers. The Romans had a much better plan. They would tell Iran: 'Hey, we don't want to go to war. We'll let you keep your religion and your language. And your leaders can remain as long as they cooperate with our wishes. Otherwise, we're gonna wipe you out."
