I was a wimp and didn't do it last year (2nd year of having zoysia). Ready to do it this year

Now is great timing.
1" would work.
I scalped one last Wednesday.

I've never truly scalped and don't totally understand it.
I have palisades zoysia, 4-5 years old now I suppose. I cut it to 2" and am happy with that height. I see a good bit of green intermixed with the brown.
How low should I scalp if maintaining at 2"?
What is the benefit?
I'm assuming I need to capture all clippings for any benefit?

And is it too late to apply pre-emergent. Just got it yesterday but don't want to screw it up.

Well I had to just go to about 2 inches because lawn mower kept stopping every foot
Should I take it down to 1 inch on a second cut later this afternoon or wait a few days to take it down to 1 inch? Thanks

Better to always apply preemergents late then never.

Helps to remove the thatch.
You can also burn it. I burned mine last year and the yard looked great.
I have never picked up clippings. I used a mulching mower and just let the clipping rot. Doesn't seem to hurt.

Probably too late for some weeds but not all. You won't screw anything up besides not getting all your money's worth out of it.

On the yard I did it look three mows and bagging in between. Constant bagging or raking

Get a sun joe verticut 1st. Pick up sprigs. Pass with mower to get the leftovers. Then scalp it, mind you I have a reel mover

Have you ever walked around an established neighborhood and noticed that the grass starts about 4-5" above the side walk? That's why.

1.5" or so, though that's not really a scalp. You still wouldn't be able to see the soil.

All in 1 day or over time? My lawn mower must suck, because even with a bagger I had to mow it twice at a little over 2 inches to help pick up all the dead grass.
No chance I can get it down to 1 inch today so guess will do that in a few days. That stuff is thick

Go up another notch if needed.
It took me a bit of trial and error.

Be sure that you have your pre emergent on point before scalping. You are going to be exposing weed seeds to early warmth, sunlight and opportunity.

About 4 inches
Took 11 to get it to 2.5 inches
18 more to get it to about 1 inch. Actually, I forgot 3 were just regular white trash bags. I ran out of the big black ones haha

I did the 1.5" cut Friday. Holy schnikeys was that a lot of hay. I had that shite tracked in my house all weekend, still working on getting it sucked up, bagged up and it'll take me weeks to slowly dispose of it in my Ascension Parish trash cycle.
That said, I am glad I did it. I think I am at 12+ bags of compacted, dried clippings in my 8k' back yard.
