Remember trying to play it at like 6 years old with my friend whose brother had it and we were so fricking lost But Godamnit if we didn’t keep just plugging away and finally start randomly figuring out shite.

There was such a sense of wonder about the layers of that game.

Que up the rumor mill for Twilight Princess and WInd Waker HD for Switch.

Seriously though - I'd buy that day one.

Damn I’m old.

Breath of the wild in restro spect was a horrible thing for Zelda as a franchise I fear.

And extremely good game that had what I’d consider major flaws that Nintendo took literally all the wrong lessons from what is by far and a mile still the best selling Zelda game at like 33 million copies.

There’s no other way to explain the bizzare choice of tears of the kingdom, a game I did not enjoy and isn’t good. You don’t literally remake the same game basically with the literal same map 1 for 1 and not address any not even ONE of breath of the wilds many flaws if you don’t think think you have perfected it or you’re just a delusional person. Oh and this took them like 6 years to do. It’s utterly bizarre

I remember my mom getting that game for us at Target. I think it was $15. Played it a lot.

If it weren't for the infinite item drop glitches, I don't think I would've finished Tears of the Kingdom. The item requirements to upgrade armor and your battery were absurd. I also hated how a lot of the sky islands and tasks were just copy and pasted over and over again. It made everything about the game more of a chore and less about exploration and discoveries. I'd play Breath of the Wild again, but no desire to ever revisit TotK.

Has to be a top five game series of all time.

I really enjoyed both BOTW and TOTK. The ascend and fuse powers were extraordinary gameplay features. Loved exploring the worlds and it’s amazing the care that went into crafted every corner of those worlds.

Nintendo does a great job of approaching Zelda games with new gameplay and fresh sometimes risky approaches. They should be commended for that given all the stale repeats that exists.

So many games that were blockbusters and/or changed gaming forever:

The original
A link to the past
Links awakening
OOT
majora’s mask
Twilight
Wind Waker
BOTW
TOTK

I haven’t played Mimish Cap or Skyward Sword.

I would agree with this statement for almost all of their entire history. This has to be tongue in cheek satire if you’re referring to tears of the kingdom though because it’s the complete literal opposite of that and a lazy phoned in boring nonsense product

I expect them to get back to their roots with a more linear game next outing whenever that is. They pushed the BoTW/ToTK formula far enough. I enjoyed playing them but have no desire to replay them anytime soon.

I’d be over the moon for a more linear, traditional Zelda game with dungeons that give you an item you use for puzzles in it and then it becomes part of your kit.

The problem with believing Nintendo will do this though is breath of the wild sold 33 million copies and I think the second best selling Zelda is around 16 million

I’ve just accepted I’ll not be catered to going forward by them though. Twilight princess is my favorite Zelda game and it didn’t sell well in relation to the franchise

I don’t know how you can say that given the insane revolutionary physics involved with the crafting. Polygon had a great article written a few years back about how amazed other developers were at what Nintendo accomplished.

I don’t want the same experience in every Zelda. I can enjoy OOT and TP while also still enjoying TOTK.

Bro they created some cool physics. How amazing what a wonderful accomplishment. It only took them 6 years to do it, since they didn’t have to create a new map as they re used the same one, with some very poor underground areas that took little effort to design as you can see by how visually same it all is.

If the put it out in a 1.5 years turn around my opinion of the game would be a lot less negative. Face it the game was low effort lazy and didn’t even have the decency to fix any of the litany of flaws in breath of the wild

A small indie studio released a game called “Under the Island” last week that is throw back to “A Link to the Past” style games.

Starts a little slow and feels like it will be extremely easy but it steps up after the first dungeon.

The over world was fun to explore, dungeons and bosses were fun, had some interesting items that changed things up.

Combat is the only thing I had a problem with. Some enemies just take too much damage early on.

It scratched the itch for me, would give it a 7/10

Minish Cap is a lot of fun. I think it is one of the more underrated Zeldas.

As someone who spent countless hours searching every nook and cranny of the BotW map, I agree here....I couldn't even finish Tears of the Kingdom. The underworld mechanic (I don't even care enough about it to go back and remind myself what the area is actually called lol) and the building mechanic fell flat for me personally. I watched all these videos about people getting creative with their builds and I simply couldn't have cared less about it when I actually played the game.

I'm hoping that this open world concept was a 2 and done for the series and that they try a different formula for the next one.

I really don't know if I believe that the BotW style Zelda has as much of a shelf life as the Ocarina of Time-inspired games released up to that point.

I spent an ungodly amount of time just wandering around botw.

Experiencing hyrule in that way was one of the most amazing things ever, even if the game imo falls basically flat in all other areas like combat and dungeon design especially as well just general having bad game design in places like being able to infinitely heal with food.

With all of those flaws getting to explore hyrule abd find all of these cool areas and Easter eggs and potential things you could make theories about them laying groundwork for an amazing sequel will always be a peak experience for me. I am in the minority here most likely but I do really like the structure and delivery method of the games narrative and think it’s pretty solid, it’s not in the top half of Zelda game stories, but solid. And I really like how it’s told.

When I found out the next game was just BOTW but Minecraft I was maybe the most baffled and disappointed I’ve ever been in gaming

I particularly enjoyed the stupid theory that Hyrule and Boletaria were the same place

I know a lot of folks bitched about weapon degradation, which I understand but it didn't bother me at all. I enjoyed using different weapons over time anyways and this mechanic helped me mentally resolve the fact that I need to be varied.

What I really hated was the crafting and cooking bullshite. Listening to that damn little clip of music everytime while I made a recipe was so obnoxious. Great game, but that was the thing I wish would die in a fire. What's wrong with doing crafting like in Elden Ring where you do it instantaneously?
