He has a school named after him in New Orleans. I believe my colleague Lester Squirrel is an alum.

Probably one of Germany's greatest generals in both WWI and WWII.
His downfall was when he got implicated in conspiring to overthrow Hitler in "Operation Valkyrie" and was given the choice of either suicide or being tried as a conspirator and have his reputation tarnished before being executed.
He chose cyanide, died and was given a hero's funeral with claims he died while in combat.

In regards to OP I think he’s properly rated. Good, not great but would’ve been interesting to see him lead a force with a well oiled logistical train behind him.

He was a great tactical commander as shown in France and a poor operational commander as shown in North Africa. He had a laser focus on him with the Afrika Korps and became a national hero. His later relationship with Nazi leadership and suicide led to him being lifted above other German generals in terms of recognition outside of Germany.

Rommel was good. Not as good as Heinz Guderian (aka Quick Heinz), in my humble opinion.

I'm more of a Heinz Guderian man myself.

He was no General Burkhalter.

Gen Wilhelm Klink was my favorite.

He lost, so .... how good you think he was?

Hard to really compare Western European German generals with the Eastern European German generals. Much smaller in terms of size, manpower, materiel, etc.
Heinz Guderian was my favorite. He would speak his mind to Hitler. I think he was the only one with the balls to do it. Plus, he was just a brilliant general.
