The Chicken Tax is a 25 percent tariff on light trucks (and originally on potato starch, dextrin, and brandy) imposed in 1964 by the United States under President Lyndon B. Johnson in response to tariffs placed by France and West Germany on importation of U.S. chicken.

quote:

Diplomacy failed after 18 months,[4][14] and on December 4, 1963, President Johnson imposed a 25% tax (almost 10 times the average U.S. tariff) by executive order (Proclamation 3564)[15] on potato starch, dextrin, brandy, and light trucks, effective from 7 January 1964

quote:

As of March 2023, the 1964 tariff of 25% remains levied on imported light trucks.[18] Robert Z. Lawrence, professor of international trade and investment at Harvard University, contends the tax crippled the U.S. automobile industry by insulating it from real competition in light trucks for 40 years.[19][unreliable source?]

As of 2025, the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster is the only imported truck sold in the US that is subject to the Chicken Tax.

Thats not what they said... They said you can't use the act that he is claiming to issue blanket tariffs.

It has to be strategic.

He can turn around and use the same act and redo it, but it has to be on a case by case basis.

You serious? The SC ruled specifically on the mechanism Trump used for some tariffs. It did not rule broadly on the concept of tariffs.

Don’t bother.

Too many on this board would lose their shite no matter what resistance is put in front of Trump for whatever reason.

If Trump wanted to create a chain of taxpayer-funded Fentanyl drive-thru’s, they would claim it’s bold and visionary.

I'm OK with this. Checks and balances, this is the Judiciary checking the power of the Executive. There will be a Democrat in the White House one day, and I'll be in support of this ruling.

Congress gave LBJ and all Presidents the power to levy tariffs under certain circumstances when it passed the GATT treaty. LBJ did not impose a tariff simply by EO - he operated under the rules of a Treaty passed by Congress.

I really don’t feel that upset over it either. I’m curious how they propose the govt. repays the companies who paid the tariffs.
