8.3 million over the cap. Shouldn't be too difficult to get under and have some money for free agency

Chargers, Washington, Seattle, Rams

If they spend some of that money, they can win a SB

This number is meaningless. The vast majority of the cap hit from any free agents we sign now will hit next year and beyond (when our cap is wide open). The Saints can sign whoever they want starting right now and for the next couple years. This does not mean they can be stupid. Bad contracts (Carr, Taysom) or bad luck (Ramczyk, MT) will send us right back to cap hell.

Before you judge the Saints next payday, recall the worst contract in the NFL!

Just a for instance, restructuring Young puts us at $2.6 mil under, which is enough to sign big free agent with a small first year.

We can get a lot further under with just simple restructures like that if we want.

Edit:
Without cuts (I think only 2 guys save money with cuts anyway, and both are negligible) or extensions, simple restructures can put us up to $57.5 mil under. The Olave extension will save us even more, and then also if we get something worked out with Cam and/or Demario before they expire.

Yet, there was an image floating around saying Saints, Clev & Miami were all in multi-year cap cleanup

If we can resign Cam and Demario, and assuming Olave extends, then yeah just about.

I wonder what the dollar difference in Clowney/Anzalone and Cam/Davis will be.

Can someone please explain to me how the frick we are still projected over this far removed from the Brees era.....does Carr still have dead money? And FFS when will we be in a situation where we actually start the off-season with space?

Carr retiring left a lot of dead money, most of which hits this year (only a small portion was on last year's cap). In addition, Ram also retiring left most of his dead money on this year's cap as opposed to last year. Jordan, Davis, and Hill, if none are resigned prior to free agency, also have dead money hits.

Going forward, if there are no big cuts or surprise retirements, we will have an extremely small amount of dead money. Currently 2027 has no dead money, and with likely no cuts (no one really worth cutting as there are only 2 guys that save money, and only small amounts) nor expiring "pushed" contracts it will likely only contain the extremely small amounts from players added and cut at the bottom end throughout the year.

I'd forgotten about Ramczyk. It's a crazy thing that a guy has to retire early and your hit like that for it.

I think we should continue to build with the draft this year and other than a guard, take it easy on FA. Get under the cap and make a run in year 3 and 4 under Shough rookie deal.

If the right free agents are available, sign them NOW. Easy enough to structure the cap hits to land next year and beyond. Why waste another year of Shough's cheap contract just so we can be higher OP's list next year? Get the players now. This doesn't mean overpay, and I don't want the Saints trading away draft picks, but the FA contracts only get bigger from year to year as the cap grows. Why wait?

Yup. I’d maybe go look at the guard Miami just cut. He rated out as a good pass blocker. And won’t count against the comp pick formula.

And try and draft good. Have a clean cap for the next two years.
