Worrying signs for Democrats as support for Republican swells in wide-open California governor race
By Jack Toledo
18 February 2026

A surprising front-runner has emerged in the hotly contested race to become California's next Governor.

A Republican candidate is storming ahead in the typically Democratic state.

British former political aide Steve Hilton is leading among the candidates with 17 percent of voter support ahead of the November election, according to Emerson College Polling.

Not far behind is Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, who is tied with Democrat Representative Eric Swalwell at 14 percent.

However, the majority of voters were undecided at 21 percent, a 10 percent decrease from a survey conducted in December.

The last Republican elected governor of California was Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was re-elected in 2006.

'The Republican electorate in California is split between Steve Hilton (38 percent) and Chad Bianco (37 percent), while Hilton also picks up a plurality of independent voter support at 22 percent,' Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said.

CA would never allow another GOP Gov imo. They would outright cheat in real time to make certain it won't happen.

The cost would be way too great for that to occur. Big fan of Hilton fwiw

Link has some solid info on the players in the race and how CA somehow has Gavin at 44/45 disapproval but Blumpf at 60+ lol

As soon as the Dems settle on one guy, he’ll swamp the Rep by 3-1.

Hilton would be a phenomenal improvement for CA. He's far from perfect, but they haven't had even a decent Governor since Arnold.

Hopefully this is a trend across much of the country. If so, that would potentially bode well for the midterms.

Successful? Look at MN and CA right now. These "successes" helped lay the framework for what we see today.

Vore farming is legal in California. Republican support doesn't matter as long as there are tons of homeless for the Democrats to farm.

I think so too. Having lived in California and being the rare conservative who would move back (to Coastal Orange County) in a second, if I could… California people are not nearly as liberal as election results would have you believe. I have many very conservative friends there, including some chicanos. I grew up in the Deep South and they are every bit as conservative as my friends and family in Alabama, Mississippi etc. L.A. and SF have a lot of leftist whackos but the rest of the state isn’t like that.

California is being held hostage by corrupt Democrats and fraudulent elections.

When this drops - the entire thing is going to be busted wide arse open

Listening to local Atlanta talk radio.. the Dems truly thought that they were going to landslide the run off special election the other day.

They are officially freaking out because they actually got crushed

Chad Bianco is a pretty good guy, runs a fairly tight department, and has a huge support base in his county. Challenging part will be getting state-wide support, but will likely be helped with the various police association's.
