Never underestimate the importance of radio play then. Today, I don’t know what what be the equivalent. YouTube plays? Spotify? In any sense, our listening was much more dictated then.

quote:But not much before that. That's the big thing The Beatles changed. They basically ushered in the generation gap. Parents and kids listened to very similar music prior to that. Even the blip of the rock n roll revolution had basically gone away by the time The Beatles showed up.

maybe the grammy's just suck?
There are no doubt great song writers/artists out there today. The grammys won't promote them for various reasons. Perhaps the consumer isn't the same as it was in 1984?

Music isn't worse.
Popular music is worse.

There is some good rock being made, but there is no real want by the record companies to promote them or to sign them wholesale.....unless they want to go to Nashville and maybe skip in on the country charts.
It's a lot cheaper to produce and record someone like Billie Eilish or Lorde than say a 5 person band like Aerosmith.
I knew a music club guy in NYC who said that we the public eat what the record companies tell us to eat when it comes to music
