Need some help to understand if there’s any potential capital gains implications by me buying and selling my XOM stock through my 401k? I’ve been catching some highs lately and I’ve been selling and then buying back when it drops 20 dollars or so. I’ve been buying equity units with the money when I sell. No idea if I’m making a mistake or not.

Wait you can trade individual stocks in your 401k? I didn't know that was even a thing. Is it employer stock, you work for XOM?
Kinda wild you are timing market but don't even know tax implications. Hopefully you are more knowledgeable about oil And gas market swings.

If he’s an employee he can make 1 buy or sell a month. They stopped employee day trading back in the 90’s before the merger.

I’m struggling with holding or selling mine and putting it in common assets since I’m 2 years from retirement.

Yeah, I’ve always hit pretty nice swings like during Covid. But I’ve never sold all of my shares and stopped buying XOM stock altogether until recently. I would just sell the shares I owned and continued buying at whatever price it was then. I may have misread something last night and it had me worried that there was potentially a tax implication when selling all of it.

I’m more than 10 years out. I would sell if I were you… no way it doesn’t drop from 155 a share. But you’re in a different boat

I’ve seen several specs over the next year that have the floor set at 145. That’s a loss but not devastating. Ive been with the company for 28 years and was 100% stock in my 401k for the first 15. I’ve been 25% across the 4 options except common assets since then but that means 60% of my 401K is still stock so a big drop would cripple me. I want to go at 55 so liquidating everything right now is tempting.

ETA: what are the odds of a split? Last time it split was around $126 a share.

I used to have brokerage link a few years ago in a Fidelity 401K. You could transfer vested amounts through the link and be able to buy anything Fidelity offered.

Unless he’s an employee of XOM then he has the possibility of NUA

28 years and that high of a percentage would make me guess that you have 10,000 or so shares. That will be a pretty good dividend income to eventually add to social security to reduce what you pull from your 401K / lump sum when you retire. So let’s say $40K + $36K before you pull from your 401K / lump sum. It is something to consider.

I don’t think the chances are very good from what I’ve read. It used to split when price per barrel was triple digits. But that hasn’t happened in awhile. The best chance was 2007 and it didn’t for some reason. All of the retirees I know pretty much live on their dividends. 60 percent of my investments were in XOM stock before I just sold them all. Hope it falls a good bit so I can buy it back lol

Great insight, might be able to save a lot of tax by paying lower capital gains rates instead of regular income tax rate if Net Unrealized Appreciation applies.

No capital gains in 401k. However when you retire, assuming you work at xom, there is potential for net unrealized appreciation. Isn’t appropriate in every situation but could be helpful.

NUA
