We are going to take a campus tour at Vanderbilt Monday. Will be arriving Saturday late afternoon. She is a singer/songwriter which has us atleast looking at Vanderbilt and Belmont.
At her age what are things we can do in downtown Nashville? I’m not sure she will even be able to get into restaurants that play live music. Maybe they start to ID after 9-10? I see a singer songwriter show at the blue bird cafe but seats seem to be limited to a few church pews on a first come first serve basis. She gigs in our town, I would like for her to see what starting over looks like in Nashville. I have no idea where to start having not been there. Any suggestions outside of stay home would be appreciated. Thank you

Edit: Staying just north of campus walking won’t be an issue.

Good it's two weeks after SnowMageddon. Good call!

First: Most Broadway bars are 21+ after 6 PM. Before 6 PM, many allow all ages as long as a parent is present. Restaurants with live music are almost always all-ages. They don’t ID unless you order alcohol.

Second: Daughter went to Belmont. Great school. Think you'd want the vibe around campus so you could see what it's like going to school in that part of town.

My thoughts:

Bluebird Café does allow all ages for the early shows, but seating is extremely limited. The Listening Room Café is usually all-ages for their songwriter rounds. Over by Vanderbilt, the Commodore Grille has nightly rounds that draw a lot of Belmont and Vandy students, and it’s open to everyone.

Broadway works earlier in the day if the goal is just to hear music and get a feel for the atmosphere. For the real songwriter side of Nashville, Hillsboro Village, 12 South, and Music Row are the places to go — coffee shops full of writers, publishing houses, recording studios, and the neighborhoods where young musicians actually live and work. RCA Studio B is a solid all-ages tour if someone wants to understand the history behind the town. Belmont and Vanderbilt students also play real songwriter rounds at places like Commodore Grille, The Well Coffeehouse, and Café Coco, which gives a good look at how young writers break in.

For a balanced visit: Broadway before 6 PM, Assembly Food Hall for all-ages live music, Hillsboro Village and the Belmont area in the morning, a walk through 12 South, RCA Studio B in the afternoon, and The Listening Room or Commodore Grille in the evening. It’s a good mix of the performance side and the songwriter world that makes Nashville what it is.

The Bluebird, the Ryman, and Robert’s. Doesn’t appear to be anything at Belmont’s Fisher Center this weekend.

Vandy has a home bball game Saturday at noon if you want to see a terrible place to watch a game.

Several instagrammable spots around town if that’s still a thing.

Shopping on 12 South.

Take a hop on/off guided bus tour with Old Town Trolley Tours. It takes about 90 minutes for the loop. You'll see most of the main points of interest without pounding the pavement or having to drive.

Are you active?

If you want a break from downtown and the weather is good… near where you are staying is Centennial Park/Parthenon..

I’d recommend renting some bikes and riding around that area. It was fun to do a few years ago

Go to the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum; it’s all genres (not just country) with emphasis on the musicians instead of the stars. It also showcases the production side of the recording industry with studios, hands-on activities, and various displays. Well worth the visit if you have any interest in any types of recorded music. I thought it was more interesting than the Country Music Hall of Fame, although that & the Ryman are worth a visit.

Gonna start with a mile walk to Robert’s and then acme

Pro tip Robert’s stops letting in under 21 at 530. Acme does not

First night out she got on stage at ACME feed sack for one song with the house band then did 3 songs at the singer songwriter at commodore grille using someone else’s guitar.

Broadway is a shite show. Don’t recommend it.

That's great! I love Acme. Good start.

Some other thoughts.

Lunch/Dinner at Sixty Vines. Located in the heart of Nashville atop Assembly Food Hall at Fifth and Broadway Street.

Pin Mechanical off 12th is an interesting place to go for bowling, arcade kind of experience. Go before 8pm I believe.

I just saw this. I hope she considers Belmont as well as Vandy. They also have an excellent music program and are well known in the business. I hope y'all went to the Listening Room. I think it's a better experience than BB Cafe.

My daughter (no pics) lives in Nashville and went to Belmont PT school. She works at Vandy Med Ctr. Belmont is a really great school and their music program is top notch. I would think she should consider both. The new Belmont Performing Arts center is gorgeous. They have special concerts and performers that come in and talk with the students. They give out additional seating to regular students at Belmont. While my daughter was a student, she went to a completely acoustic Garth Brooks Q & A there. He took tons of questions from music and production students and just sat on the stage and played with his guitar. He was only supposed to be there an hour, but stayed for over 2.

I think both schools have a lot of ties with the industry.

You got great advice from Nole Man. It's all the places I would have said as well. There are plenty of opportunities and it sounds like she' not shy about promoting herself! My daughter has a few friends in the business and she mostly hears that it takes around 8-10 years unless you get really lucky.

Thank you for replying. We did drive around Belmont’s campus Sunday. I may follow up with a few questions if you don’t mind.
There is ZERO chance she is going to Vanderbilt after today’s campus visit. I’m going to give it 24 hours before I comment. Thanks again for all the help!

Absolutely! My daughter LOVED her experience at Belmont. At least in healthcare, professors collaborate some between Vandy and Belmont and she had a few that were on staff at both schools. There are many in the industry who went to Belmont.

I’m not gonna turn this into a poli board discussion. The Vanderbilt ship has sailed and subsequently sunk.
