If a guy wanted to take his 16yo son wandering in the woods with the possibility of coming across a pig or two, where would be a decent place to give it a shot in SELA? Kids are out of school next week.

Not sure what part of Sela you are but if you want to drive towards Opelousas then thistlethwaite has more then enough hogs to shoot.

Be aware that most WMAs limit what you can do outside of deer season. For instance, you may not be able to dress in camo and sit in a stand with a deer rifle if deer season is not open. Just check before you go!

I used to hammer them at Sherburne. I use a 22 mag during squirrel season and move into the wind. I'd try to follow fresh sign. A lot of times when you get close to where they are feeding you can smell them. If they're in a group they're usually noisy you a lot of times you'll hear them and can move in. If it's really windy they're usually laid up in thickets and a lot of times you'll bump them without ever seeing them before they run.

eta: keep this in mind.

Yeah, I’m aware of that. That’s why we’re trying to go before small game closes.

Hunted sherburn a bunch a long time ago. Haven’t been there in at least 20 years. How deep do you think we’d have to go in?

I’m in Thibodaux. Thistlewaite is a little far. Used to hunt there a long time ago.

Can confirm based off friends experience. They will sweat you and make damn sure you're doing what you say you're doing. Depending on how bad of a day the GW is having he might just give you a citation. Definitely check and ask.

So basically when deer season ends, I would have to use a 22 mag or a 17HMR?

Or TSS turkey shot shells, T steel goose shot shells. I know from personal experiences that 3” T steel from a modified choke 12 gauge will kill eating size (under 50 pounds) pigs at 30 yards.

We’d walk poboy road south or north towards the shooting range then turn east until you hit the slough then follow it north or south depending on wind, try to keep it in your face and you can get close to rooting pigs. A squirrel hunting pace works well, 10 steps then look 360 for 2 minutes and repeat.

Could be, definitely an easier hunt. I’ve only hunted pigs by stalking and stand hunting.

This is why I don't hunt Spring Bayou WMA. 50% of Louisiana's outlaw trash hunt there.

Ive had good luck with that in September when the muscadines along big Alabama are dropping. This time of year id usually have to do some walking to find them.
