300 Win Mag or a 7mm PRC

Getting the itch to get me a long range rifle. I've gone on a hunt the past 2 years with Nilgai as my target species and the closest I've gotten is about 400 yards. Not going to take that shot with my .270 on that size animal.

Interesting, I thought it would be the opposite since how long the 300 win mag has been around. That is one the considerations I am keeping in mind is future ammo availability and my thought was that the 300 Win Mag would be around forever.

Killed Nilgai last weekend with both. Didn’t have any long shots though, mostly within a 100 yards and running. Both did the job.
My buddy hit a Nilgai cow with the PRC and downed it then as we got closer that fricker got up and ran. Hit it again a couple times as it ran into some thick brush. Had to go deep in there, gut it and pull it out. That was fun. Just thankful it was a cow and not a heavy arse bull

I thought your original post said 300 WSM? Changing it to .300 win mag, yes the opposite is true. 300WM has exceptional ammo and rifle availability, and would be my choice given these options and use case.
.300 win mag is the most useful general purpose lower 48 rifle chambering there is for the traveling hunting, IMO.

For me I would probably pick the 7mm PRC simply because I reload all my ammo. That's where the PRCs shine.
If I didn't reload, I'd be more likely to buy the .300

You can’t go wrong with 300 WM especially for nilgai at long range. Bullet selection will be critical. You might want to look into something with a longer barrel if you don’t plan to suppress it.
Also, someone will recommend Tikka shortly… they have good reason to, and it’s worth looking into also. However, my experience with Ruger American gen 1s have been great accuracy wise.

The 300 Win has been around a long time and is a proven cartridge for any big game in North America. Ammo is readily available and reasonably priced. If you reload then the PRC could be better for you.
It’s the new toy since it was released on 2022 and gets the hype. The WSM’s were the same 20 years ago and have all but faded away.
I’d stick with the 300 win and never look back.

Eventually I want a long range rifle also and plan to go with either the 7mm or 300 PRC. Both will get the job done. Guy that hunts with us has a 300 PRC and he swears by it. The 300 PRC carries more energy so for shots within 500 yards, seems ideal for elk.

don't overthink it
get a 300 Win Mag. Mine has become my go-to rifle. It loves the cheap arse Norma Whitetail 150 grain ammo, so I use it for deer, and switch to 200 grain Federal Terminal Ascent for long distance shots.

Killed Nilgai out to 450 with a Browning A-bolt .270 out near Del-Rio. Non issue. I've shot 3 in my life. All 3 with same gun and closest was about 250-265yds. All 3 didn't go much more than maybe 50yds if that. Good ole 150gr soft points. Nothing special at all. pass right thru.

That’s impressive… how was the blood trail?
There are so many premium bullets available these days people often overlook traditional cup and core soft points. But I always like hearing about terminal performance regardless of what it’s for.

I shot higher than I wanted to on one of them and the blood trail was drips for the first 15-20ydsthen opened up right at the end. The other two were shot lower and bled just fine.

I’ve never had a pass through on a big bull with a .300 win or .338.
Maybe I need to start shooting them with my .270
All the shots have been under 100 yards.

I can shoot Nilgai all year long so usually hold out for a very large mature bull and my 550 lb scale is not big enough to weigh them.
This is out of my Falkor so it’s a shorter barrel. Think it’s a 20 inch or could be 18 inch.

I know some ranches used to have .30 cal min requirements for Nilgai so keep that in mind.
Not sure how strict they are on that with the new calibers like 7 PRC though.

That's interesting. I know you'll lose some speed with the shorter barrel, but you should still be 2400+ fps at 100 yards, and with that bullet I'd think that's plenty to drive it through.
