The Stale Cracker/plain water shrimp boil method?

I'm boiling 20lbs tomorrow for the SB. I'm a pretty proficient shrimp boiler but thinking of trying the plain water method, after hearing good things about it here and other places. Anybody not a fan of it?
Also, watching his videos, he boils potatoes, corn and all that in plain water too. Then soaks them with the shrimp in cooled seasoned water. Do the potatoes and shite come out ok doing that?
Tia

When water is boiling, the cells in your food aren’t sucking in water. When the food is hot and the water is cold, the cells begin to expel the hot water in favor for the cold water. So, yes it works.
Also, boiling it the normal way works too.
Do whichever you like.

Thanks Bill Nye. Do you prefer the plain water method over seasoned water? Have you boiled the potatoes and shite in plain then soaked in seasoned?

I keep it in one pot for simplicity but I support 2 pots. If you can do it with shrimp, I’d recommend two.
Never done the corn and potatoes, but honestly, who gives a fawk? It’s corn and potatoes. Lol

We do it that way. Works great.

quote:I always boil in plain water and add seasoning right before I cut the fire. I drop ice in as soon as I cut the fire so I can soak as long as I'd like.Usually only about 10-15 minute soak depending on how the water/seasoning ratio ended up. Never measure either because I rarely do same size or # shrimp. Works 98% of the time every time.

I boil the potatoes for ~15 minutes in plain water as well before I drop shrimp. Potatoes usually soak up seasoning real well. I'm usually more worried about them becoming too spicy than not having enough.
I don't typically do corn in my shrimp boil (family could take it or leave it), so can't speak to that.

I get the water seasoned and boiling and kill the fire once I throw the shrimp in. You can look at the shrimp and tell when it’s done. When the shell starts to pull off the meat.
People that watch me do it call me crazy but when I boil crawfish I throw frozen raw shrimp in during the soak. They always come out great. Just keep an eye on them and don’t overcook them

Typically what I do. The boiling in unseasoned water deal is new to me.

It was to me as well when I started doing it, but I bought some shrimp off the boats many many years ago and after a few boils the peel success rate was inconsistent. So, I asked one of the deck hands wtf was up and he told me to do them in unseasoned water for better consistency. Now, I've been doing this shite for so long, I don't know if that's helped getting the peel good every time or that the shrimp I bought off the shrimper were just a few days past fresh when I froze them. Either way....the unseasoned does give me pretty damn good consistency and/or I just make sure I get them things frozen in time now.

It works. I usually tie up my corn in a separate bag for soaking because they soak up the spice so quickly. The corn I usually pull out first. Potato’s are fine till everything else comes out.

That's a good idea. The last three boils I did the Stalekracker method, everything was great except the corn was much much spicier than anything else in the boil. I would rather a bite of corn be a refreshment from the spiciness, not the spiciest thing in the pot.

You have to keep in mind that all of these YouTube guys are trying get as many views as possible. A unique way to boil shrimp is a good way to get eyes.
I’m sure it works just fine. But I know what works for me, so I’ll stick with it.

In this case, he's been doing it this way long before YouTube was invented. He didn't come up with this method to get clicks, although it does.
When he really wants clicks, he dresses up in a Grinch costume and kills nutria from a fan boat with an AR15. Post-boil seasoning isn't even on the radar for him regarding things he'll do for clicks. Those are considered his boring videos.

Does his method work, yes. Is it necessary to achieve good results, no. He had an old timer from Grand Isle boil some shrimp for him that were boiled for 20 minutes. SC said they were the best boiled shrimp he ever had.
AFA potatoes and corn I boil them for 15 minutes in seasoned water.

Is that crazy? I don’t use frozen, but I throw in cold fresh shrimp and been doing that for years.

Part of the reason I use frozen it to help cool down the pot. I guess it throws people off that I throw the shrimp in with the fire off.
But I also have a lot of friends that can’t boil water.

Do you have a link to this? This is contrary to every SK video about shrimp that I've ever seen.

Does his method involve halfway through the boil, leaving to go pick up your intoxicated friend and leaving the scene of an accident?
