Imane Khelif opens up on natural male gene while agreeing to undergo testing for Olympics

Polarizing boxer Imane Khelif provided context on her biological makeup after becoming the central figure in a debate about transgender athletes during the 2024 Olympics.
Khelif, an Algerian who won a boxing gold medal, confirmed to French outlet L’Équipe that she has a female phenotype but also the SRY gene, which is correlated with males.
She said she will undergo testing under specific conditions, if needed, for the 2028 Games.
“Yes, and it’s natural,” Khelif told the publication. “I have female hormones. And people don’t know it, but I’ve already lowered my testosterone levels for competitions. I’m surrounded by doctors, a teacher is following me, and I’ve taken hormonal treatments to lower my testosterone levels.
“For the qualifying tournament at the Paris Games, which was held in Dakar, I lowered my testosterone level to zero. And I won the gold medal there.”
Khelif’s details come after the World Boxing Organization announced in 2025 it would have mandatory sex testing for all competitions and mentioned her specifically by name.

She added to L’Équipe: “Doctors and teachers decide. We all have different genetics, all different hormone levels. I’m not a transsexual. My difference, it is natural. I’m like that. I did nothing to change the way nature did to me. That’s why I’m not afraid. For the next Games, if you have to take a test, I will submit to it. I have no problem with that. I already did this test. I contacted World Boxing, I sent them my medical record, my hormonal tests, everything. But I had no answer. I’m not hiding, I’m not refusing testing. What I don’t understand is why we want to make my story so bigger.”

Liar.

Yeah everyone has female hormones, it’s just the amount of estrogen in your body
Probably took some testosterone shots and shut his natural production down to “lower his levels”

If this is accurate, she should've said it all along and she may have been in the clear. There's precedent (in track, at least) where women with DSDs would be allowed to compete if they suppress their testosterone levels with drugs.

Isn't this exactly what steroid users do/did so they could pass testing? How does temporarily lowering testosterone so you can get tested mean that you are definitely female?

Yes. It means he took steroids to crash his natural levels
And to act like that makes him female

You don’t get it. His bone structure and anatomy is different from having elevated testosterone his entire life
Just because he takes some test before a competition to crash his natural production for a few weeks doesn’t mean he’s in the clear

Doesn't jibe with

Furthermore, while her condition may very well be "natural"... it doesn’t change the unfair advantage her typically testosterone washed body has against those who do not have the condition.

Just have it pull down its pants and look for a ding dong or surgical scar. That’s all the science needed

Does it have a penis or vagina

Looking up the SRY thing... probably a pretty strange vulva with empty nads attached.

Genotype is the key question here. Is she XX?

From what I recall at the time, she has AIS. My understanding is that this was not discovered until puberty, as indicated in the description below.
Female external genitalia paired with undescended testicles is a characteristic presentation of Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS), typically the Complete form (CAIS). These individuals have a 46,XY karyotype, but their bodies do not respond to androgens, resulting in a female appearance at birth and no uterus.
Genitalia: The external genitalia appear as typically female.
Internal Organs: Testes are present (undescended, usually in the abdomen or inguinal canal), but there is no uterus, fallopian tubes, or upper vagina.
Puberty: Individuals often experience normal breast development but do not menstruate (primary amenorrhea).
Diagnosis: Often diagnosed during puberty due to lack of menstruation, or in childhood via inguinal hernia repairs.
I do not think she probably has a biological advantage over other women in a combat sport like boxing and should not be allowed to compete, but if that is indeed true, I can't help but feel some sympathy for her.

All healthy human beings have some level of estrogen.
He is a male with a DSD according to this information.
