Union approves national agreement negotiated with marathon for 30,000 oil industry workers

quote:

HOUSTON, Feb 6 (Reuters) - The United Steelworkers union (USW) adopted a national agreement negotiated with Marathon Petroleum (MPC.N), opens new tab for use in contracts between 30,000 oil industry workers and their refineries and chemical plants, the union said in a statement posted on-line.

The 4-year agreement will lift pay for the hourly workers by 15%. It also provides a $2,500 signing bonus for USW represented employees.

Way to hold their feet to rhe fire and continue to outpace median wage increases in the US. Gold collar workers continue to live up to the name!!!

Plus an additional 2% bonus!

God Bless the USW.

Weren’t they asking for a 35% raise? I’m assuming other plants that have USW represented employees will follow suit but aren’t necessarily required to.

They were asking for 25 and got 15. Shoot high and hope for something fair. Worked out pretty good unless you’re one of them California guys.

Fair? It's been around 3.5% to 4% for the last 15 years at least. A bump this time to adjust for inflation would have been fair.

Yeah!! They really stuck it to management! Those damn suits. They’d have us working 80 hours/week if it wasn’t for our amazing union! It’s us against them!

Unions are communist. They have not place in modern society. They depress productivity, stifle work ethic and a desire to earn more through your efforts. Why work hard when I’m going to get paid roughly the same as Bob, who screws off all day? All while the Union bosses take your money to buy votes and pay themselves a lot more than you make. And if you scream all the manufacturing jobs went overseas, unions played a big part in that. It doesn’t make sense to pay a line riveter $90/hour including benefits when you can pay Mexicans or Brazilians $13/week. They had their place and time, but unions suck and should go away. It’s not the 50’s anymore.

Organized Labor in the US couldn’t be worse for their own rank-and-file if they tried.

They’d be cartoonish if real families weren’t involved.

They are outpacing average wages of those at the same locations not protected by the union (professionals and non-professionals).

Contractor bill rates are increasing at a faster pace but the contractor rate is not.

Yes. By about a quarter percent on average.

The top 10% of professional wage earners are outpacing the numbers agreed to. The rest are at or below that number.

The company makes up the quarter percent difference not negotiating each contract. It's a net win for the company.

I'm surprised they got 15%. Marathon is soft af. 1 more month in 2015 and it's likely plants vote out USW. We had almost 40% of the represented workforce cross the line and come back in, and each week the groups were growing bigger and bigger. 1 more month and all of the best workers would have been on the inside and the rest could go elsewhere.
