Crazy idea - Put the winter olympics where it's always cold.

Or do they just keep doing this shite on purpose so they can bitch?

The average high in Milan is 49F in February.
That's about the same as places like Fayeteville, AR and Asheville, NC.
What a fricking joke.

Even the "nearby" (4-5 hours away!) resort temps for February are 37/20.

If you have to go European, there's the French, Swiss, Austrian, and Bavarian Alps. Much colder. FFS.

You realize Milan is at the base of the Dolomite Alps. They aren’t skiing through the streets of Milan.

Milan is the hub. There’s other venues spread around the region with Cortina serving as the base city for the alpine events.

Cortina d'Ampezzo:

It’s currently about 50° in Salt Lake City, Calgary, and Squaw Valley. It doesn’t matter if it’s pleasant down in the valleys as long as there’s snow up in the mountains.

And that's a historic torch for those areas, especially Calgary. Average high for this time of year is 30.

Went to Cortina mid July. It was snowing at the top of the mountain we went up. It’s cold enough.

Imagine how embarrassing it would be had they had Winter Olympics this year in Park City where they have no snow.

Cortina got 9” of fresh powder Wednesday and had to cancel the downhill practice session. Seems cold enough to me.

Check out Denvers temps then look at the surrounding ski resorts. Same thing.

Stubborn high pressure is finally moving out this week.......but, I believe Sochi had similiar issues 4 years ago with a stubborn weather pattern that brought historically low snow totals.

Bruh the Olympics need a big host city that can accommodate it. You mention the French Alps, which is where the 2030 Winter Olympics will be… don’t look and see that many events and the closing ceremonies are in Nice cause you might have a stroke.

The problem is you need a large city close to snow. Since the snow line keeps moving up, it’s farther and farther away from the cities. And there aren’t any cities where the snow is now because that used to be a glacier. What you need is a city with infrastructure like Denver that is close to the slopes but all the NIMBYs there keep voting it down. Why they had the ‘76 Olympics pulled!

Cortina is hundreds of miles from Milan. This is like having the Olympics in Los Angeles and Lake Tahoe.

How dare people prioritize their quality of life over tourist development.

Fun fact: Rocky Mountain High by John Denver is a protest song about the proposed Denver Olympics.

The Paris Olympics holding the surfing competition in Fiji pretty much broke any notional geographical barrier.

IIRC the upcoming LA Olympics will be scattered all over Southern California.
