Just finished season 1 of Wire. Pretty mediocre, but not bad. However, does it improve? ...and if so, when?

I don't remember exactly when it improves but I tried multiple times to get through season 1 but never could finish. I finally did and then at some point it becomes pure greatness.

It took me three tries to make it through Season 1 over a 3 year period. I'm about to finish Season 4 tonight. I think finishing Season 2 was the point where I had to stop trying and it became really enjoyable. Still not living up to the hype that everyone says IMO but still a high quality show.

If you didn’t get hooked halfway through season 1, just stop

Season 1 is great.
It sets the footprint for the next 4 Seasons.

My first watch through I missed everything and didnt know what it was building. The 2nd watch through was great.

Best show on Television.

I feel the same way

The show is slow but builds for the first 10 episodes

Then it takes off

I was pumped after watching season one then just didn’t like it.

Been trying to finish it for 2.5 years.

Thought the same about deadwood. Been watching for 3 or 4 years and just can’t finish it.

Two of the best shows people love on here sucked to me

No. It starts at 10 and stays there. A lot of people don't like S2 because it switches pretty abruptly to focus on the docks and a lot of new characters. You should probably just spend your time finding something you actually like rather than forcing your way through five seasons. If anything, S5 ranks last for me but it does tie everything together and provides a closure of sorts (that we are doomed to repeat the same cycle of addiction, corruption, and interdiction that we have always had).

OK,

So season two is a step up from season one?

In a two day span on the movie board you've said that an actress is a skank simply because she's black and that The Wire S1 is mediocre. Go ahead and stop posting.

Well no, I described her as a "skank" for reasons other than her race. I don't care about her race.

Go back and read the thread.

S1 spends a lot of time building and growing momentum, and has a really exciting and propelling ending that gets you really into it typically

Season 2 completely resets the show in terms of focus and location. Lot of people on first watch hate the second season because of this, but ultimately S2 is one of the best seasons of the show if not the best.

Each season focuses on a different aspect of the drug trade and corruption in Baltimore. S1 the streets, S2 the docks, S3 the politicians, S4 the schools, and S5 is the media. So they all do a similar refocus, but Season 2 feels the most jarring because it’s the first time it shifts and is the hardest shift

if you are iffy after S1 just quit now and save yourself the time. There are no other subsequent seasons that will blow you away if you're underwhelmed by S1.
