The Portal era is just different. Not better or worse

I just saw a thread reminiscing on NSD. I agree with the overall premise, NSD was awesome. Especially after watching HS highlights, wondering where everyone is going to sign, etc.
But the portal gives an entirely different dimension. I'm excited to start going through the new portal players I haven't seen and looking up highlights/stats. This also allows people to check in on other teams. I know some of us watch a ton of CFB but there might be some people that walk away knowing more about 2025 Kansas State because they are watching Jayce Brown highlights. That's a net positive.

Its worse because you care less about 1 yr players. Program you build is similar to an nfl system of revolving door, and players have 0 commitment to a program, university, staff, etc. If they care less, it's common sense that the fans will care less. Its great for 1 yr attempt to rebuild, but 3 years of rebuilding through the louisiana high school ranks is a part of what made great seasons mean more. And teams didnt fall apart with 40-50 departures if a coach left, due to the limitless transfers.
Portal portion of this era is literally the problem, not even the nil. If they add sitting 1 year out if you transfer back in, it fixes the biggest issues with the current system. Agents can't leverage every school every year for the same kid. If johny cant help other programs day 1 of transfer, schools will focus on rewarding their current players, and developing ones they have given serious $$ too.

Not being able to retain kids further down the depth chart and develop them is the change that I think makes it worse.

It’s definitely worse

In some ways yes. I hate that we seemingly have to learn a new roster every year. And players, by and large, don’t have any real pride in their school.
But there are pros too:
If you miss on recruits or even a whole recruiting class, you aren’t stuck in mediocrity for a year or two while you coach up the younger guys. It also stops teams from stacking 5 stars like Bama and UGA used to do. Meaning more teams have good enough players to compete for a natty.
I really wish they would limit guys to 1 free transfer or make them sign 2 year contracts that can’t just be bought out. Or anything to give these rosters some kind of stability. It’s so hard to have to re-recruit your whole team every year.

You just watched Indiana win a national title.
College football right now is at an all-time high in terms of P5 teams ability to be competitive.

this system is for sure chaotic, but it's better than alabama having a monopoly on the top talent. there was a 10 year period where they stockpiled everyone. so many more teams have a chance now. it's better for the sport.

We’re generally rooting for laundry more than ever. Fortunately at the top ten or so programs (that includes LSU) a higher percentage of players will stay for more than a year more often than at all the rest of the college programs.
I don’t have a good alternative, the genie is out of the bottle.

Right now it is worse. Once they get some kind of regulations in place, I think it can be better than it is.

Oh it’s much worse. The two weeks or so is added excitement, but doesn’t nearly make up for the failure of it. I enjoy knowing our players before like week 10

No it isn't.

It only feels 'not worse' right now because LSU got the better end of it in the portal. But, having to re-recruit your entire team every year is pretty sucky from a fan and coach's perspective.

As an LSU fan, much better. Skenes, JD5, Tommy Tanks, etc etc etc. One could argue no university has benefited as much as LSU. Best brand in the sport.

It's definitely worse but still the best sport out there. Maybe boxing when there's a big fight coming but those are few and far between these days. College baseball is high on my list as well.
