Trump admin to eliminate DEF deratement

Had to look it up as I drive a deleted 2006 F-250 with straight pipes.

Not eliminating DEF (yet), but getting rid of the deratement which sets the engine to crippled almost no power when the exhaust system fails apparently.

Grok:

quote:

”In the context of the X post you linked from Lee Zeldin (@epaleezeldin), who is the EPA Administrator in this 2026 scenario:

- **DEF** stands for **Diesel Exhaust Fluid** — a urea-based chemical injected into modern diesel engines to reduce harmful emissions (specifically NOx) as part of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system.

- **Deratement** (or "derate"/"derating") refers to a **forced power reduction** (derate) that the engine's computer automatically imposes when the DEF system malfunctions, runs low on fluid, has a sensor failure, or experiences other aftertreatment/emissions-related problems. When a derate triggers:

- The engine significantly reduces available horsepower and torque (sometimes to as low as 5–20% of normal power, or even limp-home mode).

- This makes the vehicle (truck, tractor, heavy equipment, etc.) much slower, harder to operate, and often unsafe or impractical for work — especially for truckers on highways or farmers in the field.

- It is a deliberate EPA-mandated design feature in post-2010 diesel engines to force owners to repair emissions systems quickly and prevent tampering or defeat devices.

Lee Zeldin is describing a major pain point for diesel vehicle operators (truckers, farmers, construction, etc.) who face frequent, expensive DEF system failures and the resulting derates that cripple their equipment.

**What he is proposing/doing** (from the post): - In August 2025, he already issued updated **guidance** to engine manufacturers that reversed (or relaxed) some of these derate requirements. - Now, he's taking the next step: launching a formal **rulemaking process** to **permanently eliminate** these derates entirely.

- As part of building the case for that new regulation, he's sending a **mandatory data collection request** to manufacturers today.

This gathers detailed information on DEF system failure rates, patterns, costs, etc., so the EPA can independently evaluate the ongoing problems and justify removing the derate mandate.

In short, he's pushing a deregulation effort to get rid of what he (and many operators) see as overly punitive, unreliable, and burdensome EPA emissions enforcement mechanisms on diesel engines — aiming to make equipment more reliable and reduce downtime/repair costs for American truckers and farmers, at what he calls "Trump speed."

Replies to his post show strong support from that community, with many calling for even broader changes like fully removing DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), SCR/DEF requirements, or allowing deletions after warranty.

That's the problem, it will be reversed. Nothing will be done unfortunately.

Dems will forget about climate change now that AI needs dirty energy to drive it.

There is hope for us yet

Cats and mufflers were the only thing to delete on the 06 other than EGR.

This is correct. OEMs aren’t in the business of retooling for admins. Also CARB is going to sue over this and it’ll get stuck in the courts.

The only way this really has an impact is if the EPA chills on aftermarket programmers to override the derate. I highly doubt OEMs will offer reflashes. And the aftermarket stuff will still have warranty concerns especially on diesels that everyone wants to crank up.

I deleted my 2008 Megacab but didn’t delete my 17 or 22 F250. I miss having a deleted diesel with no def and hope they go back to that eventually.

I did a ton of work to my 05 250. Turbo, mbrp straight pipes, sct tuner, etc. some of that was because of the damn oil cooler and egr issues. But when I got my 11 250 I didn’t touch it. The new ones there’s just too much for me to deal with pm a daily. Also I’m getting older

Well fortunately enabling and disabling limp mode is basically a button click in the software. Theres basically zero development cost with it and there is a chance that 2027 model trucks will not have DEF related 5mph limp modes.

And really, that solves the biggest issue with SCR systems. The forced limp modes are downright dangerous. If you get a limp mode impending fault you have 200 miles to get to a dealership, and youre stuck there until they fix it, which might well take a month or two.

It should all be gotten rid of. Especially on tractors. There isn’t enough tractors operating to make much of a difference emissions wise but that shite is a costly burden on farmers and tractors have become unreliable pieces of shite due to it all.

So conducting a study before doing it. That always goes well.
