Around 12. Bases start to get longer. You start to geared toward more traditional baseball. 13, the bases go back again and 14 is when it’s big boy baseball.

i think you're missing the talent of the kid part of the equation. don't use this as an excuse to start your kid johnny over lefty peter who's a fricking stud.

different for every kid.

whatever age the kid is when that half a step or so the runner gains by the SS having to turn his body to make a throw is more than the SS can make up for with his arm.

Sooner the better, quite honestly. If you leave a left handed throwing kid at 4,5, or 6, he’s just missing out on time that he could develop as an OF or 3.

Coaches Pitch. Pay baseball the right way. No excuse to play a LH SS past Tball.

I’m left handed. Loved playing SS every chance I got which was only in mop-up-duty-like situations.

I was never a regular SS nor should I have been because I was never going to play there. Much better to play where you might play long term.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with some practice reps at SS. It’s good to work on playing the infield and making longer throws even if you will only ever play 1st or pitch.

Good swing… this my nephew he good at baseball period… my brother was advised let him play shortstop left handed as long as he possibly can… the 3 and outfield positions he will naturally adapt to…

anything past coaches pitch it becomes questionable and even then, it's based on team needs.

I can see the argument of letting him do it young because VERY soon he won't get the chance.

I'll strongly disagree with your brother, you don't naturally adapt to any position on a baseball field, it takes reps and certain type of talent at each one to be good.

That’s my argument also.. advice came from a guy who had a decent career in the minors played for LSU also… his argument is playing the infield left handed efficiently until the talent catches up can only help a ball player when it’s time to transition to the 3 or outfield… coaching will handle the rest… I get his premise..

He will never play it in high school/college so why waste reps there and not get him better in the OF or 1B

depends on level of play. if he is playing basic rec, just let him have fun....same with like lower level travel ball. Higher level travel ball where kids hit the ball hard and can actually play....prolly not at 8 or older...but that is assuming he isnt the best on the team.

but if he isnt the best on the team at it....he shouldnt play it. Get him prepared as soon as possible for the position he will play by the time he gets 12+ which is Pitcher, 1st and outfield.

yep....every middle infielder thinks they can go play the outfield easily....every outfielder thinks he can play middle infield...been that away since the start of baseball

they learn soon enough....its just different.

its not a bad premise...i would counter though that if your nephew is good enough to play short, he needs to be playing better competition until he no longer can play it. I dont care the age.
