The NFL’s international plan for the 2026 season is now at an unprecedented scale as the league has completed agreements to return to Spain and play in France for the first time.

The multiyear pact with Madrid political leaders and LaLiga’s Real Madrid involves the league returning for another global game at the club’s Bernabéu Stadium. The Commanders and Dolphins played there in November to cap a seven-game international slate in the 2025 schedule. The game, won by Miami 16–13 in overtime, drew a robust crowd of 78,610, and NFL officials called the event “a pivotal moment for the sport in Spain.”

The return engagement will seek to advance the NFL’s presence in another important European country for the league. The upcoming game, meanwhile, will also take further advantage of a $1.6 billion renovation to Bernebéu Stadium completed in late 2024.

The Bears, Chiefs, and Dolphins have rights to Spain in the NFL’s Global Markets Program.

Shortly after the early Monday announcement of the Spain deal, the NFL unveiled a separate pact with French authorities to ??play a game at Stade de France—the country’s national stadium—with the Saints named as one of the participating teams.

The Spain and France deals, meanwhile, advance what will be a record level of NFL overseas games in 2026. The following cities are already confirmed for next season:

Madrid

Paris

Rio de Janeiro in a similar return to Brazil

Munich, in a continuation of annual games in Germany that are set through at least 2029. Eleven of 32 NFL teams have rights to Germany in the Global Markets Program, a figure higher than any other country

Melbourne in a first-ever regular-season game for the NFL in Australia. The Rams will be the designated home team in that contest

Three games in London

I feel like the NFL offices have a white board full of exactly what fans don't want, and they are just crossing them off one at a time.

Instead of spending that money to improve the US game they are chasing fringe fans in foreign lands.

They don’t care about you the fan only their ability to screw over US fans.

Why not spend that money of a professional ref company. To vet every ref. To grade every ref and pull them after a board of ex-refs grades them to require remedial training.

Could own the market and use same company to certify college refs and even other sports once it has a reputation. This would require making them year round highly paid professionals. Off season could do ref camps and teach certification courses.

But instead they chase other countries where they will never make huge inroads. Its a novelty and that will draw some initial interest. But long term its not viable.

This costs fans home games in US. Costs those cities lost revenue. All the ripple effect money wise. And the travel isn’t good for players who now play 17 games vs 16.

All that for a league that absolutely DOMINATES in the US

Why would they spend more money? The game is as big as it gets in the US

People bitch and complain but the fans watch and spend money regardless

What does the N stand for in NFL?

Boxing used to be our biggest sport. It fell. And NFL will slowly piss away its fans. It will happen, people can only take so much crap rammed down their throat.

Pretty soon cities will stop funding stadiums especially as they move games overseas. Or they will put clauses in requiring no games moved from home stadium.

Nothing is too big to fail. As CFB erodes that carries over to NFL as well. It won’t happen overnight but it will fall from grace. You can only piss off your paying customers so long before they rebel.

Nascar used to draw 18-20 million viewers. Now if they get 4m its big news. Thats another sport that pissed off their loyal fans. It happened in baseball too. That sport is making a comeback but not what it used to be.

NFL Super Bowl has peaked. Having performers that offend over half the audience isn’t helping. And its become nothing but an all day ad. Thats losing its luster. Ads aren’t funny any more because woke ad firms have to tone down any fun. Hell even the scantily clad cheerleaders have trannies now.

They could have honed their audience. That in turn keeps ad costs high and makes them more money. Instead they are moving to overseas where its just a novelty that will never have staying power.

It might take another 10 years but NFL is headed down.

They are showing us how unimportant they feel we are to the bottom line. Ithats their choice but eventually they’ll learn they’re a novelty in those countries, not a cornerstone for the league.

Because that would not generate revenue.

How much hatred and contempt does Roger Goodell have for season ticket holders?

Not true. A better fairer product would increase viewers. Would increase betting too. Thats more money.

You have to spend money (smartly) to make money. Why do companies advertise? To make more money. But you need a good product to begin with else it only goes so far.

Melbourne will be an absolutely brutal trip, but going to a game at MCG would be a lot of fun

Makes zero sense, but I’d expect nothing less from the greedy NFL

Just gonna skate right over the part where they describe HOW it generates revenue?

Now, it may not generate enough to be viable, but that's a different discussion

For novelty sure but the MCG field is massive so you're probably going to be sitting a long way from the action.
