Wonder why they’d do that

Because people can be really shitty to one another when they are sitting behind a keyboard. That was an extremely innocuous post, yet I’m sure it would have become today’s battleground in the culture wars. Easier to just shut down comments on the front end than have to moderate it on the backend.

Do black people actually like this level of pandering?

I'm not black but I think if I were I would find it cringe AF.

you are 100% right, but this is about as lazy as you can be for "honoring the black community". they probably deserve to be roasted.

The better question is, will there be a new Halo release anytime soon or are they pretty much done?

Because no one gives a crap about Black History Month and this pandering is old.

Halo is and has been done for quite some time. 343 ran it completely into the ground and then buried it 12 feet deep.

...then dug up the corpse, ripped Master Chief's armor off, and wore it as a skin suit.

Are they not working on porting CE into the Unreal Engine? Going to get the 3rd release of CE

Infinite was actually pretty good, they need to get their asses around opening up more of Zeta Halo.

Nah. Companies don't do this for black people. Companies do this for progressive white liberals.

I think there's context missing from this take. Halo releases events and custom skins for gay/trans pride, disability awareness, black history month, etc. etc.

Yet this picture is the extent of their Independence Day celebration.

There's more nuance to the complaints than this lets on.

I'm sure you'll disagree with me, but I put those in completely different baskets, and frankly, I'm mildly surprised they even went that far re: Independence Day. I know people treat them like lightning rod issues, but at least in theory, all of those pride/awareness/whatever events transcend nationality. Celebrating "national" holidays is a bit more isolating in regards to the fanbase.

And I say that as someone who would prefer all of these companies keep their pandering to themselves as a general rule.

For pride and disability stuff, sure. February being black history month is exclusively American so that doesn't jive.

Hell World of Warships, a game made by Russian developers, does more for 4th of July than Halo.

While it might only be celebrated here, it's not inherently exclusive to black Americans. I would put Black History Month more in a basket with something like Día de Muertos: primarily celebrated locally, but not limiting by nature.

Do you think they did that out of some desire to celebrate the United States, or do you think they did that to overtly pander to a fanbase that, by their nature, self identifies more with nationalism/patriotism than the average Halo fanboy?

I don't care what their motives are. It blows holes in your argument that it doesn't make sense for 4th of July to be celebrated in games with global audiences. It was also only one top of the head example. There are plenty more you can point to. There's also massive events across gaming for things like the Chinese New Year. A localized holiday has never seemed to be much of a limiting factor.

Insinuating an American company holding an event or simply making a commemorative skin for their own country's independence day in their WAR game as being out of place just doesn't hold much water, in my opinion. Especially when you consider the fact that Halo's playerbase outside of the U.S. isn't that big in the first place.

The point remains. When you can go the extra mile for a bunch of politically charged social stances and do the bare minimum for a national holiday in the country in which your franchise and entire platform was founded and based the backlash shouldn't be hard to understand.

Nothing makes me think more about the contributions black people have made to society than whatever the hell those skins are.
