Wow what an awesome story.

2 questions:

1. Is it worth it to watch one of the movies or TV series, or will they never hold up to the novel/taint my impression of the story?
2. Should I read The Three Musketeers next? Is it as good as TCOMC?

This novel really blew me away. What a great story to start off the new year.

The film made in the 2002 film was great.
Great film.
The remake really didnt feel like a revenge flick.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245844/

This is one of my favorite films.
But I might dabble in the book.
there.

I read it lasy year then read The Three Musketeers.

The Count of Monte Cristo is my second favorite book after Lonesome Dove so I didn't find it as good but would still recommend.

Also curious on any movies and television. I only remember a little bit of the 2002 film.

There is a 2024 limited series that will be releasing on PBS in March. It was a joint French/Italian project but all the actors and dialogue are in English. Jeremy Irons is Abbe Faria and is probably the only recognizable actor in the show. It’s far more faithful than the 2002 movie, which is essentially Count of Monte Cristo fan fiction. Too many liberties taken, especially the ending, for me to enjoy that movie.

I could not put it down. I stayed up an extra hour every night lol

ETA: the COMC has definitely secured a place in my top 5. I also read Lonesome Dove this past year and it's up there as well. So many good books to be read and not enough time!

Oooh this is exciting. I will probably watch this series first. I can't stand when movies/shows aren't faithful to the books so I am hesitant to watch the 2002 movie, despite it having good reviews.

My guess is that the 2002 version is great to people who have not read the book and probably not as impressive to people who have read the book, which is pretty common. I read that there is no Luigi Vampa in the movie which surprises me!

Oh, maybe it’s this new series coming out that doesn’t have Vampa! I read it in an old TD thread.

Okay I may have to give the movie a try!

Yea, The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my of time favorites. I don't think I've ever even read a 1K page fantasy book that was as exciting as TCOMC was. It's pretty incredible how griping the book is all the way throughout.

I used to love the 2002 movie and I'm sure I could watch it again and enjoy it for what it is but now that I'm older and care about stuff being faithful to the source more, I don't have any desire to watch it again. It's just so far off from the source i know I couldn't get past it now.

There's also a 3 hour 2024 French movie that is ok. It doesn't exactly follow the book either, but it's still pretty entertaining.

I think that's the one I watched. I didn't mind it until the end and they made changes that kind of changed the whole theme of the book.

I'm putting that on my TBR for this year. Do you need to read all three in the trilogy or is The Three Musketeers ok as a stand alone?

I finished it mid January as well and it is right up there as my favorite. Couldn't put it down.

I’m not one for the classics, usually I have a hard time with them and they underwhelm me

However this one seems to be universally acclaimed on here

May have to start it soon.

I read the book many years ago (was fantastic) and immediately afterwards wanted to see it on the screen so I watched the 2002 caveziel version. I remember being pretty let down, although I can't remember specifically why. I think it probably differed too much from the book but again don't know anything specific offhand.

Within the last year or so I was on a flight and I watched the 2024 version, it's French so had to use subtitles. I remember liking that one a lot.

I am having the opposite experience--I find them OVERWHELMING in things they cause me to think and feel. I am only just now in my 30s discovering the classics, as I skipped all of the English and literature classes in college. I think exposure to this stuff as an adult is such a gift. I find each classic novel I read to be so enriching that I can't believe I missed out; then again, I don't think I would have appreciated them as much in my youth.
