The State Capitol Raceway in Erwinville, one of the oldest continuously operating car racing venues in the United States, appears to have closed without warning. “SCR will not open for the 2026 season,” the venue announced in a Jan. 17 Facebook post. The news came just hours after the raceway had promoted an upcoming race, “The Battle of The Bayou,” scheduled for March, and the abrupt reversal has sparked confusion and speculation online.
in the 70's a night at the dragway was the pinnacle of human endeavor. NHRA Cajun Nationals RIP

Hard for them to compete with the I12 drag strip and their federal funding.

went to many of them with my dad in Irvington, AL growing up

Cajun Nationals was the bomb - went several times with my dad - a drag race enthusiast.

I heard half of the drag strip is on leased land. The land owners aren't renewing that lease.

Was it out there where the guy used to race busses with a monkey?

Shirley Muldowny, Kenny Bernstein, Don Kallita, Ed McCulloch, Blue Max, etc. seen them all in the pits. Mrs. Joker was the modern day equivalent of Sydney Sweeney if you know what I mean. Haha.

State Capitol had no chance once Nelson Hoya took over at No Problem in Belle Rose.
The issue historically with No Problem was that the track surface wasn’t good enough to run a top fuel car on.
Two years ago, I worked with an Antron Brown A Fuel team and the idea was that Antron would also haul his top fuel car down to make an exhibition pass- the plan was scrapped thinking the track surface wasn’t good enough to do it.
When the A Fuel car got to No Problem with that team, plus some of Antron’s Matco team guys- they started to look at the track and immediately said “we shoulda brought the top fuel car”
The idea then was that the driver of the A fuel car would move to top fuel ultimately and it would give her a chance also to make a few hits on it.
Fuel cars are a different breed- for the uninitiated, you can learn to drive a 275mph car with no blower but to make a 5000 hp jump with the blower- you get to make some 100’ hits, then some 300’ hits before you ever even get to think about making a 1000’ pass.

The loudest sound I've ever experienced was when they had a top fuel exhibition there in the early 90s.

I remember when The Duke's of Hazzard movie was filmed there

I used to go there with my uncle (and his kids who are my age). He used to race.. Did they also race dirt bikes here? For some reason I recall going to a dirt bike race a few times as well. Sad to see.

Sad to see it go. Won many a street class then foot-brake trophies there back in the day.

I would stand there in pit, 5 feet from car and they would hit it - eyes watering and hair standing straight up. Man I loved it. Shite was a blast. Pure, raw horsepower.

That might have been another dragstrip somewhere between Lafayette and Lake Charles.
I know a few guys who used to race there who said the dirt bike guys were crazy.
They'd pull up to the line, chug their beer, throw it in the grass, and haul arse down the track.

Saw my first set of live tits at the Cajun Nationals. I was 15 and there was a woman with really big tits there wearing a tube top. It was hot and many beverages were consumed throughout the day. The drunker people got, the more the encouraged her to release the twins. Finally, right before the top fuel finale, she complied and started dancing and jumping around. I remember nothing of that day except for that wonderful woman and her bouncing D cups. I still love tits to this day.

It is very likely that's where I am thinking about for the dirt bike races. I remember it being... I guess amateurish.
I remember my uncle telling us about a fight.. My memory is just bits and I know for sure we went to the state capitol dragway (he raced cars as well. He didn't have an elaborate outfit or anything, he just liked to race shite with a motor) but don't know the other few places we went, but I do know there was one where dudes were drinking and my uncle telling us about a fight or something..

There was a circle track around Prairieville, certain times of the year, they’d have motocross races inside the circle.
