As long as Stephen Ross owns the Dolphins you can safely eliminate Miami's head coach from consideration.

Tons of respect for the career and accomplishments but Reid seems to be on the downslope of his career. Not sure he’s as excited about the grind as he used to be, and he’s facing a tough reload with that roster.

Add Cincinnati in that category also.

Reid
Payton
McVay
Ben Johnson
Shanahan
not necessarily in that order but close. not sure how anyone can make a case against Reid being the top coach.

Not as sharp as he once was.

We shall see. He’s been an elite NFL coach for two decades, but is he still on that level? Even elite coaches eventually lose their edge or get caught up to by younger, hungrier minds.

Mike Vrabel (New England Patriots): A strong favorite for turning the Patriots into a 14-3 division winner and AFC powerhouse in his first year.
Ben Johnson (Chicago Bears): Guided the Bears from a poor record to an 11-5 NFC North title, bringing new energy to the franchise.
Mike Macdonald (Seattle Seahawks): Masterminded a 14-3 season and the NFC's top seed, a dramatic improvement for the Seahawks.
Liam Coen (Jacksonville Jaguars): Also a top contender for leading his team to significant success in the AFC.
Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco 49ers): Continues to have his team at the top of the NFC.
In no particular order, per the NFL 2025 coach of the year.

Sean Payton seems to be on almost every list. Did people think he was this good when he was coaching the Saints?
As a Saints fan I know he's an offensive genius, but he has had some great defensive play too. I wasn't excited when he was hired to coach the Saints. All I knew about Payton was Parcels calling him "Dennis the Menace" and Jim Fassel took away his play calling duties. I should have realized Fassel was an idiot and remembered Parcels f's with people he likes. Sean gives Parcels a lot of credit for mentoring him. His time under Parcels probably taught him the importance of defense, and a basic understanding of how to coach, and hire, defensive coaches, for his teams.
Check him out from 1992.

Not yet sold on Vrabel. Pats played a very soft schedule this year. Evaluate him after next year when they'll be playing a top tier schedule. He has a QB now so it's looking good.

Vrabel’s accomplishments in Tennessee with an average QB and no star defensive players were impressive before he even got to NE. Even if the schedule is not impressive, it’s hard as hell to win in the NFL and he damn bear won every game this year. Won at Buffalo, at Tampa, at Baltimore with a lot of rookies and unproven guys coming into the year. Players compete their butts off for him. I think he’s elite.
