Is Cignetti already a hall of fame coach?

Or does he need to add more to his resume?
I think this Indiana team has revolutionized the sport, not because they were a special all time team, but because they opened up the sport to so many programs previously felt like they were on the outside looking in.
Mind blowing what Cig has done

Lets pump the brakes a bit and see if he can sustain success without a team in their mid 20's.

The CFB HoF is the hall of very good when it comes to coaches
He could retire today and would a mortal lock

Yes. There's not a coach alive, including Saban, that could have done that turnaround in two years.

Yes almost every National Championship winning coach is in the HOF

Agreed. He has a good track record and a winner mentality. I'll probably get blasted for this but if he doesn't have Mark Cuban he never sniffs the Hall.
But you'll probably have to say that about all coaches moving forward.

Dont disagree at all. And he will get in the HOF, I just am not sure we will see him sustain this level at Indiana long term.
He loses a frick ton of experience and chemistry from this team.

I feel like almost anyone who wins a NC is, but i know they have very specific criteria.
idk if any is a longevity thing but I know winning percentage is because Les dipped just below with the vacated wins

Don’t you have to have a minimum number of games?
Posted on 1/20/26 at 11:20 am to theCAW
As long as his win percentage stays above .595 he is a lock.
He is at an 80% clip between IUP, Elon, JMU and IU.

100 games. He has coached 186 between his stops. He is at 90 at the D1 level (2 of his five seasons at JMU and 2 at IU)

People (including voters) almost universally get HoFs wrong.
This above statement proves it. Its as if the scale goes Horrible>Bad>Average>Good>Very Good>....Fame?
Fame doesnt equal Great. Its not the same word. Its not the Hall of Great.
To me HoF criteria is often "Can you tell the story of the sport without this person (excluding nefarious reasons)"
So yeah, Cignetti will almost assuredly be a HoFer now based on current accomplishments alone.

The greatest coaching job ever better be in the hall of fame
This win is going to be remembered forever
What is more famous than that

Portal makes this a reality for any program that has the money or want to play the NIL/Portal game. Its not going away anytime soon.

1 Cignetti/Indiana NC is worth the same glory of 3 of Saban's NC's.
