Tipping culture is getting more aggressive

Last week my friend and I went to a sports bar to watch Indiana/Oregon game. My bill came out to $26. I gave the waitress two twenty dollar bills in the folder 15 minutes before the end of the game. She just kept it without giving change back. I didn’t say anything but I’m just not coming back.
While running errands a few days ago, my old lady craving her signature drink at Starbucks. At the drive thru window I was asked by the screen how much to tip before telling me the cost of the drink. I tapped 0% with my middle finger.
Traveling right now with the family. Yesterday we went to this ice cream place. The bowl with all the trimmings was $17. But when to sign the tablet, I saw that the 18% tip was preselected by default. Luckily i was able to catch it before pressing ok but I bet a lot of folks didn’t.
But one good story. I took my kid to one of those indoor kids playground. After I paid with my card, the girl reached around the tablet and immediately pressed no tip. The fact that she did it so quick and knew where the button was without looking shows me that people are fed up with it. Either that or she’s not getting it.

quote:Not only would I have asked where my cash was before leaving, she was of been informed I didn’t appreciate having to ask, and told discreetly on exit that’s why she has lost and otherwise acceptable tip. It’s the principle not the money.

Because I don’t submit to extortion.

You’re better than I am. Because I would’ve demanded my change and then likely not even tipped after she stole that money from me. And potentially even let a manager know that their employee is pulling that bullshite.
That would’ve pissed me off big time.

So 40% is normal now... These people are nuts.
They get 20% if the service is good, 15%, if it's sub par.

And note that the post says “on the low end..”
Ridiculous.

It is insane now how people expect to be tipped 20%+ percent by default whether they provide service or not.
Its also why we do takeout most of the time we eat out to avoid the drinks and the extravagant tip.

Had that as an option the other day at Subway

That's a 40% tip. $38 tip on a $95 meal.. nope.
I'm done with tipping all these places.
Grocery stores always asking for donations and money too.

Dont give cash, Ive had friends tell me I should tip with cash bc the server can avoid taxes. My response is its not my job to help them avoid taxes. Im annoyed people even mention this.
Also, preselected tips is major bs.

Ordered take out Saturday. Parked my truck walked in to pick it up. Had a 20% tip added. Nope; take that off. You walk it to my car I would have gladly paid that but that’s not a service you offer.

"If you don't want to tip your server at least 20% don't go out"
Ok.
Usually soon followed by:
"Wahhh we are struggling because people don't support looooocal. Please come eat here."

Nope, this is when I’m calling the owner to say, if you can’t pay your staff you need raise your prices.

Aren’t tips tax free money now? If so, seems like we should drop back down to 10%

Holy shite thinking that 40% is low. Great service means 25-30%
shite like this is why we go out to eat less and less. The experience is not worth the money like it used to be.

So are the people who believe it's real. But today I learned the OT loves AI music and fake social media posts

Attitudes like this aren't helping.
If I do my job sub par, I get fired. I sure as hell don't get a 15% bonus.
Sub par = 0 tip.

It's funny to me that the people whose livelihood relies on people going out to eat are telling people to stop going out to eat.

agree, however, the wife and I tried a new place(to us,) last Friday and it was a throw back as far as service, all servers were polite and friendly, waited on us hand and foot, a pleasant and enjoyable dinner, and I tipped the heck out of them
