How many relics can you tie to a song/video?

Since Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie, and music still on MTV

Video killed the radio star.

Who knew that nobody would want to watch 13 hours of Ridiculousness a day rather than watch MUSIC Television?

MTv died a long, long time ago. What we've seen for the last twenty years or more was just a bastard clone.

That's what happens when you forget the M in Mtv stands for music, not the garbage programming for which they sacrificed the music videos.

They were already leaning hard into bullshite reality programming before YouTube showed up, but once on-demand video existed the old model was finished. There was no path back to profitability. Why sit around waiting for something to come on when you can just type it in and watch it immediately?

People keep saying this and yet MTV got rid of the channels that only play music because no one watches it. The main MTV that shows Jersey Shore and The Challenge still exists.

In case anyone else was confused

No, MTV is not shutting down entirely in 2025; rather, its parent company, Paramount Global, discontinued several of its dedicated, 24-hour music-only channels (like MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live) by December 31, 2025, due to declining viewership and the shift to streaming. The main, flagship MTV channel continues to operate, focusing more on reality and pop culture content, but the era of linear, music-video-focused broadcasting for those specific channels has ended, sparking nostalgia among fans

Fixed the typos in their article.

It was my senior year in HS when MTV came out, it was all the rage.. They got away from what it was intended for and totally screwed the pooch...

Wonder what program director screwed it up...

Made out with a chick for hours with M TV on.

If I hear Walk Like an Egyptian, it twitches even today.

Thank you, M TV.

All I know is that MTV Classic is still on YouTube TV. At least for now anyway. That's the only one worth watching these days if only for the nostalgia.

I don't even know why they keep the name Music Television. Should call it Reality TV Manure but that doesn't really roll off the tongue.

The exact opposite. The original channel is still going. It is the spinoff music channel that closed down not the original channel.
