Indiana football’s dream season has helped land another big donation from the school’s wealthiest alumnus.

Billionaire and Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban, a 1981 IU graduate, told Front Office Sports he has made another donation to the school’s athletic department amid the Hoosiers’ undefeated run to the College Football Playoff semifinals.

“Already committed for this portal,” Cuban wrote to FOS in an email.

Cuban clarified that he lets athletic director Scott Dolson decide what to do with the money, and didn’t say precisely how much he gave.

“Let’s just say they are happier this year than last year,” Cuban wrote.

On Sunday, Indiana landed TCU quarterback Josh Hoover to replace Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza under center; Michigan State receiver Nick Marsh and Boston College running back Turbo Richard are also headed to Bloomington next season.

Hoover and Marsh were considered two of the top players in the portal.

Cuban, who is worth $6 billion according to Forbes, has given millions to his alma mater over the years. In 2015, he gave IU $5 million for a sports media center and he gave $6 million in October to fund the school’s rugby club.

But he had never donated directly to the athletic department until Dec. 2024 after Curt Cignetti’s team shocked the college football world by going 11–2. In October, he told CBS Sports he gave “a big number” to the athletic department and said his connection with Cignetti was a factor in his decision. The two are just three years apart and were born in the same Pittsburgh-area hospital.

The crazy thing is that Cignetti went 11-2 and made the playoffs at Indiana without major NIL backing.

College sports is in a weird place. If Jerry Jones ever decided that he wanted to see Arkansas win a title, they'd probably be instant contenders.
But good thing for us, Jerry isn't giving his money to anything that he won't be able to have total control over.

Cuban’s an IU grad with frick you money. Why shouldn’t he give back to his school in this way?

Nobody was crying about this when traditional programs were being floated by major boosters pre-NIL.

Yep. This is a total wrench in the system and the old timers can't compete.... So you know it will get remedied soon because Alabama going 8-4 every year and Indiana and Texas Tech and Oregon contending for national titles over the likes of OH State, Georgia, USC, Texas, Michigan, etc, will simply not be tolerated.

If its Shark Tank Cuban, its pennies. Man invested like a Miser...IU might be getting donations in Bitcoin and Yuan.

Everyone still following CFB should probably read this book:

Details the history of the Billy Bobs and Joes paying players in the SEC, profiles Saban and Smart and how NIL caught them off-guard and changed the landscape overnight vs. How paying players used to be done.

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney mentions, “There’s no rules, no guidance, no nothing. It’s out of control. It is not sustainable. It’s an absolute mess and a train wreck, and the kids are going to be the ones who suffer in the end.”

Oregon has been in title contention more times in the last 15 years than Michigan, USC, and Texas combined.

Indiana was not one of those teams for about the past 130 years of it having a football team.

What even are college sports anymore? Why do we have a professional sports league where am the teams are owned by universities? And funded by random billionaires?

Definitely takes some of the shine off of Cignetti. Basically doing what the Dodges and Yankees do in MLB.
