Denmark No Longer Delivers Letters - Will This Gain Political Traction in the U.S.?

Today marks the first day Post-Nord, Denmark’s Postal Service, will stop delivering letters and will only deliver packages. In Denmark, email has taken over as the default means to send bills, etc.

Consider what hand-written letters mean and have meant to humanity. This marks an interesting turn in human history.

Other countries will follow, undoubtedly, but I assume European countries will be first. There has been no meaningful discussion of phasing out letter delivery service at the USPS to my knowledge.

I still think it’s fascinating that for .79 cents, you can have a letter hand-delivered anywhere in the U.S. within 4 days (on average).

With the rise of online shopping, I can see why they would make this decision. In my neighborhood, one truck brings packages, and the other brings mail.

I wonder what will happen to all of the junk mail that was being delivered alongside the letters.

I also wonder about those without access to email.

This news makes me sad…

Your experience with the USPS has been drastically different than mine.

The USPS is not about delivering letters. It’s an employment grift.

When's the last time you mailed a 6 page handwritten letter to Aunt Vicky detailing your family's vacation at Disney World?

I'm willing to bet the most personal "letters" sent these days are store bought Christmas cards and Wedding invitations.

Another step towards a "cashless" society. Can't send a check through the email system.

I suspect you’re still in college, but soon you may realize most professions use the mail for official business. It’s not only used for advertising

That’s not true….i get them all the time. They’re called e-checks. You just print them out on your own printer, and the bank accepts/processes like an old school check.

Danes will still be able to send letters, using the delivery company Dao, which already delivers letters in Denmark but will expand its services from 1 January from about 30m letters in 2025 to 80m next year. But customers will instead have to go to a Dao shop to post their letters – or pay extra to have it collected from home – and pay for postage either online or via an app.

Most countries have a law that Somebody must deliver letters. If Dao stopped the government would appoint someone to do so.

I don't know about the US but the country I am familiar with I know a lot about their system. Letters cost the company to deliver and parcels earn them money. The government / rules do need to change to allow companies to make the money unless it's nationalised and see as a public service.
