The Case to reduce Present Bowl System
Posted on 12/30/25 at 9:00 am

Thru 24 bowl games this year attendance is averaging a whopping 22,077 and that's with 64,000 and 41,000 at LSU/Houston and Penn State/Clemson.
Take those 2 games out of numbers it falls to 18,400. Now these numbers should make executives with ESPN/Disney cringe. How can a corporation afford to be a bowl sponsor with these types of numbers? The tv viewership has to be in line with these pitiful numbers except the 2 games mentioned above. Now the next 11 non-playoff bowls have decent matchups that may up the attendance numbers. A bowl system of 35 non-playoff bowls needs serious revamping. a bowl system of 10-12 with games taking place before Christmas so players and others associated with a football game i.e. the band can be sent home for Christmas avoiding unnecessary expenses to universities. My name is Jeff Landry and I approve this message....LOL Happy New Years!

Why? They care about tv numbers.

Post the numbers. I have no idea what kind of money these bowl games bring in. Do you?

eliminate the current bowl system entirely.
move it to the first of the season - ala kickoff classics.
expand to include basically all P4 teams
let conferences/teams continue to work together to create fair matchups
use it as the Wk 0 game. count it. teams schedule 2 more games + conference schedule.
move playoff structure up. move portal window back.
college football is more or less fixed.
wont happen because its too simple of a fix

Its pretty obvious to anyone paying attention that espns tv viewership is probably better than their regular programming when showing these bowls, so it prob outweighs the expense in alot of cases. The games will continue. Not sure why this is a problem. If you dont like it, dont watch.

You make quite the case considering you have no idea what you are talking about. Disney doesn’t give a frick about a games attendance

As long as the tv stations are making money, they’ll keep on keeping on.

With bowls tied to TV deals and specific conferences the bowl system is never going to go away. I wish it would because its not even good football anymore and there are so many opt outs but I just don't see it happening because of the reasons above.
When they elect to expand the playoff again maybe they can reduce the number of bowls but unless they adopt the FCS playoff model then the bowls will always remain.

agreed. Disney only cares about TV viewership and therefore ad rev.
empty seats is only an optics problem. play the game in a smaller stadium.

I'll get the TV viewership numbers next month when the data is made public. Corporate sponsors and TV advertisers should be beholden to the stockholders for spending money on BS! Take Hermann Memorial running 2 National ads during the LSU/Houston ...yea that's really good for the moral of nurses and employed physicians ..kinda of like OLOL spending millions to get naming rights to Cajun Field in Lafayette...

Osteen - As the ex-husband of a TV news anchor/ news director in a Top 30 market I know more than you will ever know. The sponsors care about the attendance and without sponsors the whole enchilada falls apart. Ask the PGA tour about sponsors dropping out of the game.

Attendance? Who cares?
Bean counters at Disney are adept at bean counting. I'm guessing you lack the data they have at their disposal.

Why does this even bother you? It will run on its own. These executives only concerned about TV numbers. There is enough fans in the seats to support; otherwise local bowl group would kill that bowl. It’s happened before and will happen again, if bowl is a loser. Teams are compensated; they would not lose money traveling to a bowl.

Wont happen due to the seniors from the prior season not being able to celebrate with a bowl.

Sounds like you’ve got it all figured out… You should apply to be a CEO for some of these companies

While I agree with some points in your post, you failed to mention the host cities financial gains.

Do you track Primetime numbers for regular programming? Probably not, and you probably don’t care.
Just don’t watch these shitty bowls if you’re not interested. It gives schools, players, and fans a chance to enjoy something. It also acts as a mini spring training practice for many programs.

People forget a shite load of these kids never play pro and these bowl games are fun for them and their families.
I'm not going to watch all of them, but I have no problem keeping them around just to have SOME semblance to the game of college football I remember as a kid.

What about the ones like Guillory? Punish them because a couple guys want to preserve their 1-3 round picks?
