Bayou Cane Fire Department

quote:

We are on the scene of the marsh fire between West Main and Hwy 311. It is moving from Hwy 90 toward Savanne Rd. We cannot reach the fire at this time. We will continue to monitor the situation.

HTV has some good drone shots of the fire.

I was at my parents house this afternoon and it was raining ash.

Seems they burned that section this year earlier than years passed.

I used to burn six square smiles of prime freshwater marsh each year. Waited till February when it was really dry. I loved that shite.

Oh yea!!! I hope someone had a good rabbit hunt.

Sounds like they worried about it buring the power poles down.

What’s a marsh fire? Explain it to me like I’m a North Louisianan who’s lived in California for the last 40 years.

What is a marsh fire?

Specific to this incident, this is an area about 2 miles X 4 miles rectangle of undeveloped wetlands. Full of dry vegetation and small trees.
The fire crossed over Savanne Rd and continued into a more heavily wooded area that is a little smaller.
Fortunately, the fire lost momentum and basically burnt itself out before doing any damage to any homes or structures.

Can be pretty dangerous. Almost always self lit. Just a way to control the growth. In our area roads and canals usually contain it. However like this one when it's that windy it can jump over. You also have lots of hunters in the woods and that can get sketchy real quick..

kind of early for burning the marsh, isn't it? I seem to remember that being a late season/end of season thing the trappers did when I was a kid. Are there any fur trappers left around Houma? They were few and far between by the time I got into high school.

Controlled burns are a good thing and a certain percentage of marsh owned can be burned annually and money received from Feds for doing it. If all the dead grass in a marsh builds up too much the fire gets too hot and damages the roots, including destroying floating turf. There are two uncontrolled burns near Lake Charles. To the north at the junction of the Calcasieu River and West Fork, is the Little Burns. On the south side of the GIWW on the hwy to Creole is the Big Burns which is now open water.

I had a piece of crap duck lease near Willow Lake where "pasture" meets deep marsh. Most of the lease was the pasture with a hard bottom and an inch or so water. I tried to get a good burn on it for several years to get rid of all the dead vegetation. Two strong fronts in the row dried it out enough to get a fire started. The fire not only burned the 60 acres but also 100+ to the east. That owner was happy as he grazed cattle on it. That spring the nice tender shoots came up and his cattle had good grass that summer.

The following teal season, the teal LOVED all the green shoots in that 1 inch or less of water. My former partner in the lease got his limit twice daily. Previously, it had not been good for teal except maybe one.

The only reason to have that lease was because in 15 minutes I could be there from the middle of Lake Charles and another 5 minutes in the blind. Some Pentacostal had obtained Willow Lake and ran around in an airboat which is bad for keeping ducks around.

Unfortanely for me, I moved to Baton Rouge that year.
