For the longest winless streak against teams with a record of 8 or more games under .500

2020 - L at 2-10 Bengals
2021 - T vs. 0-8 Lions
2023 - L vs. 2-10 Cardinals
2023 - L vs. 2-10 Patriots
2025 - L at 3-12 Browns

The Tomlin Special is holding strong.

Without Cowher handing him the keys to a ready made team, he would be another Marvin Lewis.

That argument might have held water for a couple seasons but Tomlin has been HC for what....15-20 years? At some point he deserves credit.

The Steelers cannot simply fire a black man and replace him with a white man

Plenty of NFL teams have replaced black coaches with white coaches. I think Tomlin's consistency is fine and the Rooneys don't run the organization like Jerruh. He could get fired but most likely he'll be allowed to step down, but who is waiting in the wings?

Credit for being slightly above average? He hasn't won a playoff game since 2010. His fourth year as HC, with a lot of Cowhers guys still there.

He is an average HC. He won't get fired because of his owners. But he is not winning anything in Pittsburgh.

For what, exactly? Having the most average record in that timeframe?

Jerry is notorious for allowing coaches to stick around too long now.

Time has proven the argument to be more solid. Since the coordinators and staff that were there under Cowher, that Tomlin inherited, filtered out around 2011, he has only won 3 playoff games in 15 seasons.

Should also point out that the hires that Tomlin made to replace Cowher’s guys have left his coaching tree empty. 20 years as a coach and not a single one has moved on to become a head coach.

His early success, his only real success, came from inheriting an elite staff and several hall of fame players. Tomlin also has significant input on player selection, it clear that player evaluation has declined significantly as well.

Steelers have had three head coaches from 1969-2025. 56 years.

That's absolutely astonishing.

Because he was not as good.

Garret was .559 over his 10-year career.

Tomlin has been .627 over his career and .610 in his last decade, his worst 10 seasons.
