Anyone ride? Looking into getting a Trek street bike and hitting some long trails in Florida. Not a cheap hobby, but it looks to be a nice mix up from gym/running.

Two cyclists were hit by a car and killed in Frisco, TX just a few days ago. So sad. Seems so dangerous to ride on the street, even if it is legal. Stick to the trails and enjoy your new hobby.

I enjoy riding, but usually plan my routes to avoid cars as much as possible. I wish some of the European biking culture would make it's way over here but that's just a dream.

I have a road bike but usually ride my surly which is more of an upright hybrid. It's a little more comfortable and I'm not racing anyone. Road bikes have changed a lot in the past 10 years allowing for wider tires. In my opinion, this is the way to go.

Yes, bikes are an assumed risk. Former teammate was killed in Tennessee last week when he was hit by someone running from the cops. Mitigate risk as much as you can but there is only so much you can do. I ride off the road more than on it these days.

Would recommend hitting the trails and possibly riding in a group for roads. As others have mentioned, cars are just so risky.

I used to ride about an hour a day, would ride in the country, on highways etc. One day a car was going at least 85mph and swerved into the shoulder only a few feet away. I wasn't hit (thank God, I'd be dead) but I haven't felt safe biking around cars since and wouldn't unless there was a large group too big to miss

Where in Florida?

1) the road cycling scene is pretty good with good infrastructure in South Florida at least. Lots and lots of roadies in Palm Beach and Miami. That being said… road ain’t for me in this day and age with distracted drivers.

2) depending where you are, the Florida mountain bike trails are surprisingly fun despite very little elevation to work with. Virginia Key near Miami is great. Alafia near Tampa is solid. Markham and Jonathan Dickerson (which might be closed now…) and some others near Palm Beach are good. Santos by Ocala is fantastic.

Thanks for all the responses. I’m in Tampa area. Any trail recommendations?

I saw that story, that's awful. It was basically a peloton so I'm curious what the full story is going to be.
