I have a good friend who charters inshore around Charleston, every year when I see him I get a rundown of dumb questions he's heard.

What are some of yall's?

Example of his all-time favorite- "How many other captains have you known that were lost to the sea?"

I asked our captain if there were any fish in the middle of the Pamlico sound of the outer banks.

He looked at me and said:

“frick if i I know! I only fish the Ocracoke Slew”.

Not a “dumb question” but I did have a 75 yr old grandmother tell where I should be fishing two years ago.
Had trouble opening my cast net one morning, my three guys were watching hard. I finally asked them if they wanted throw the Mfr and all declined.

There are some good ones.

"Do you know any other spots"

"Do you think they will be here"

"Have you ever caught anything here"

Then what do you throw in the water to make a slick so that the guy who pulled up and cut off your drift stays on the spot thinking the fish are hitting?

No chips? I don't think I can fish without Doritos. Never have. I mean, it's gross because I have fish hands and I'm eating chips, but it's not the most gross thing happening on a fishing trip.

Old old fisherman's superstition.

My Delacroix Isleno father-in-law would not allow any bananas on his trawler, and most of the others I got to know down there wouldn't either. Now this was a long time ago, 1980s-90s.

He also would never begin a trip on a Tuesday. Never.

I told my guide one time I wanted to catch a tuna on my punch rig bass rod. He obliged. (It was a reel that held several hundred yards of 50lb braid). I held my own till he went deeper than I had line…lol
Guide got a nice tip that day tho. He was a good dude. Super strike charter out of venice and his name was Justin.

Old old fisherman's superstition

I pretty much grew up on a shrimp boat/commercial fishing boat and had never ever heard of it. Mid 2000s and I’m chartering and all of a sudden sports are showing up asking about bananas like it’s some kind of taboo spooky shite. I have never heard or seen a person scared to bring a banana on a boat that made a living on boats!!!

Where was this? My father-in-law grew up as I mentioned at Delacroix Island, these superstitions were widespread with the old-timers in the 80s and early/mid 90s.

FIL told me that was always the deal with all the families as far back as anyone could recall.

Apparently, “can you clan my ducks.”

Went out with a guy about 8ish years ago. Guy was almost 2 hrs late. Got to the blind well after daybreak. Saw very few ducks. Didn’t help that none of us could hit anything and my 870 was giving me problems. He barely spoke the entire time.

Guy wanted to leave on time after being late. Get back to the dock and he hands us our birds. My FiL asked him if he could clean the ducks. Dude looked at him like he was invoking Prima Noctum.

Needless to say we didn’t tip him and never called again. Pretty sure he’s no longer in business.

Metropolitan twin cities of boothville Venice. I’m 49 and started going out with my grandpa when I was 7 . Grew up and was around commercial fishing and oil and gas supply boats my whole life.
