Here's an article from TMZ

quote:

Nick Reiner was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and in the weeks leading up to the murder of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, the meds he was taking made him "erratic and dangerous" ... TMZ has learned.

Two sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ ... Nick was under the care of a psychiatrist for mental illness. We're told in the month before the murders, Nick's behavior had gotten "alarming."

He had recently received care at a Los Angeles-based rehab facility that specializes in mental illness and substance abuse. We're told the facility charges $70,000 a month ... and lots of rich, powerful parents send their troubled kids there.

Our sources say 3 to 4 weeks before the murders, doctors changed his meds and he became even more erratic. Our sources say doctors were trying to adjust the medications so Nick stabilized, but it wasn't working.

Our sources also say Nick's substance abuse was worsening the schizophrenia.

I know the Reiner case is old news now... but I thought that schizophrenia, psychiatric medication and drug abuse were something to discuss.

Especially considering in a lot of cases like these where people either plot horrific violence or "snap", we don't usually get a glimpse into what factors may have been at play.

While no doubt schizophrenia is a very real and very serious mental illness, this feels like laying the foundation for the rich Hollywood version of “he wuz a gud boy, he dindu nuffin!”

While the medications and stuff may have made him not responsible for what he did, he is accountable for what he did. And what he did was murder

Yeah.. the TMZ article ends with "Based on what we're hearing ... this is going to be a case where Nick will plead not guilty by reason of insanity."

I do wonder why, if he was having that hard of a time with illness, meds and drugs, why he wasn't inpatient until he was stabilized.

I like the way you put that.

I wonder if the schizophrenia was of the paranoid type -- very difficult to treat. Don't know enough to know if he had command hallucinations [ I kind of doubt ]. He certainly identified his victim pool - his parents - so something went awry - he is 32 years old.

Since I'm not even mildly versed on legalities, I'm sure the "diagnosis" of schizophrenia is a necessary step in setting up his defense.

The defense strategy probably hopes for getting him off as not able to stand trial at best and a reduced time or a couple of years in some kind of rehabilitation facility for the worst.

If he pleads NGRI he will face trial. He will not be contesting the murders he committed but what his capacity was at the time

If he had not killed the "rich Hollywood" man, ironically his father, and had killed some poor schmuck like a hospital worker or a cab driver or wal-mart person that is exactly what they would say. However, with this murder of a liberal golden boy, they will lock him away forever, as they should have done years ago.

I have a buddy whose brother was a diagnosed schizophrenic, before the murder. He's sitting in Florida state prison, doing life without parole.

There was a case here where a son was abruptly taken off his medication for schizophrenia by a new doctor and ended up stabbing his father to death after having a hallucination. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and is in a mental institution. I think the psychiatrist was held liable, but the details on that are fuzzy. He had been diagnosed many years prior and had been stable for several years, was married, and had a good job. The switch was apparently really abrupt because of the medication issue.

All that to say, if his medication wasn't working, he truly might not have been fully aware of what he was doing. I feel so bad for the whole family. The siblings lost their parents and their brother. I don't know how you even process that.

Oh bullshite. He was at a Hollywood party with his parent before he went home and killed them. Why didn’t his schizophrenic episodes happen any time before or at the party.

Didn't the reporting say he had an altercation with his family at the party?

I just think that IF this reporting is true- he should have been inpatient until he was stable.

Well that’s another angle, he may have been diagnosed but he was fine until he killed them so I doubt he was at inpatient levels. The kid is odd to begin with, raised in Hollywood and his dad had lost his marbles himself. This schizophrenia is just a defense to lighten the sentence by his Hollywood lawyer who helped other scumbags.

TMZ stated that his medications were being changed, he was kind of unhinged and had been erratic... maybe the article is setting the public up to be accepting of an insanity defense..
