Not necessarily. The fear is (and rightfully so) that the G5 would sue over being excluded. Odds are they would also win.

Why? The CFP is independent of the NCAA and has no obligation to member schools. Simply make it the 12 top-ranked teams by the committee and let the chips fall where they may. If a G5 team is ranked high enough, they play. If not, they stay home.

I never understood how pompous SEC fans believe 5 SEC teams deserve to make the CFP…if you can’t even make a conference championship games a team has no business playing in the CFP.

There’s really no excuse not to move to only 4 conference champ autobids next year, even from G5’s standpoint.
Boise would’ve still made playoff last year as they were 3rd highest ranked conf champ and Tulane would’ve still been in this year as they were the 4th highest ranked conf champ

The G5 wasn't excluded from the BCS or CFP 4. I believe that's what's being proposed by the OP.
