Smart to pick a hull thats already proven. Will it have VLS? Torpedos?

This is actually smart of our military for once.

Crank out a bunch of ships with a proven design instead of wasting billions on the worthless "littoral" ships that cant even leave port.

When do we hear the names, the don jr, Eric, Tiffany, ivanka and Barron will be the names of the first ships.

The last hull was “proven” too.

The NSCs don’t have sonar or VLS, or advanced sensors like Aegis, etc this thing is going to need. They are going to have to add all of that, meaning endless design changes and lengthening the hull. Just like the Constellation. Not to mention that HII is already slammed. Where and when are they going to build these?

Navy procurement may be the single most incompetent part of the government.

They just did that with the FREMM’s/Constellation class. But then made so many changes that it got too expensive so they scrapped it. And here we are back at square one

They wont have to be AEGIS ships. They can be used like F15EX and F35's and be missile trucks mated to the sensor suites on the Burkes when they escort carriers.

Give them strong ASW suites and point defenses, plus good radars and vertical launch systems,

They literally just tried to do the same kind of "retrofit" of an existing design with the Constellation class and failed. They lengthened the hull, made modifications, and added so much gear that the vessel became overweight and prohibitively expensive. We need our Frigates to be fast, moderately armed, and cheap. The main purpose of these boats are to protect convoys and do patrols so no need to spend unnecessary money on them. We need numbers more than anything and we can supplement our blue water fleet with drones

More importantly, we need to increase the military budget from around 900 billion to about 1.5 trillion per year. This may sound crazy but during the cold war we spent between 3-5 trillion per year in today's dollars on the military. Our ships, planes, APCs, and nukes were all designed and fielded during the cold war and are well past their service life. China does not report their own numbers accurately and is effectiely outpacing us in almost every regard

Rightfully so.

Bringing common sense back to the military.

Right. My point being that all of these would have to be added, and more—which is exactly what just sank the Constellation class.

Kind of off topic but I’ve long thought that the Navy should go away from the Super Carrier. Instead invest in twice the number of cheaper and smaller aircraft carriers.

That’s pretty much what the Wasp’s and America class LHD/LHA’s are with the F35B

Yeah but those are primarily for the Marines.

I think it’s be cool to see a traditional CATOBAR carrier but half the size. Maybe big enough to carry maybe 30ish aircraft. A mix of fighters, AEW and ASW.

Good frick them blue states. If they want shipbuilding jobs learn to vote right.

I know we technically won it but 49.6 to 48.7 is too close. Mississippi went 60 to 38.

It's what happens when Navy Project Managers careers and future earning potential are on the line. Take a project and allow Contractors to run amok, and you end up with a a vessel so overwhelmed by budget expenditures that only its mother could love it. Frigates are to provide an extension to the Air Warfare Commander of the Carrier Strike Group, not be a do nothing Jack of all trades
