Of the many animated/live action Dr. Seuss adaptations that have been done over the course of the 21st century, How the Grinch Stole Christmas holds a special place in my heart for whatever reason. It's also fun watching Taylor Momsen cover "Where Are You Christmas?" all these years later.

It’s a cult classic that will stand the test of time. Back then, people always ragged on Jim Carrey for his repetitive acting styles, but looking back on it now, he’s a legendary actor who gave every role 110%.

I highly doubt there will be another Jim Carrey ever again in our lifetime. He was truly one of a kind.

IDK

I kind of view Robin Williams being another great actor that is similar to Carrey.

LOL. He overacted every role. Sometimes it worked (Dumb and Dumber) and sometimes it didn't (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Liar, Liar,). The original is the GOAT.

LOL is this a troll saying Jim Carey's acting didn't work in either of these 2 films? surely this is a weak troll attempt

That was his thing. Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber and Liar Liar are still funny. His stuff on Living Color is also classic. He just got weird and fell off sometime after The Grinch.

While I love the original, Carrey was perfect as the Grinch in the live action movie. That's a bad take IMO.

Also, you call it "overacting", I call it incredible physical comedy.

Liar Liar is good, but it's a mid-tier Jim Carrey movie and was the first time I remember getting a little tired of the same schtick. I never even bothered watching The Grinch up until a couple years ago because of that...and I was a HUGE Jim Carrey fan up until that point. He was my favorite actor and comedian. I wanted to BE him. But it started to feel like I was watching something I had already seen in some of the movies he started to do in the late 90's, with the exceptions being his serious roles and Me, Myself and Irene. Something felt different about that one, even though it was Jim being Jim for a lot of it. The story was just good and the supporting cast was awesome.

Top Tier Jim Carrey
Dumb and Dumber
Ace Ventura I and II
The Mask
The Cable Guy
Truman Show
Eternal Sunshine
Me, Myself & Irene
Man on the Moon

Mid Tier
Grinch
Liar Liar
Bruce Almighty
A Series of Unfortunate Events
I Love You Phillip Morris
Batman Forever

Not really sure where to put all the Sonic Movies, but he was great in them.

underrated

if you ever get the chance, check out the DVD extras, where Carrey tries out some different characterizations - all totally improv - some of which ended up in the movie

Th Grinch is my wife’s all time favorite. I

Unpopular take, I can’t stand live action Grinch. I hate it and always have.

The production, set design, camera angles, the lighting, I can’t stand any of it.

this is a troll but if you want to get into it, overacting implies there is nothing underneath what is being said and the actor is pushing to make up for it. Jim's antics were more often than not, motivated.

The frick? Carrey's acting style meshed perfectly with The Grinch. It's SUPPOSED to be cartoonish. And I bet you that Dr. Seuss would have loved his performance if he was still living when the film came out.

I agree with this, except that I don't even think it's fair to call it a cult classic...it's a really great live-action adaptation of one of the best/most famous cartoons of all time.

Carrey obviously overacted a bit, but he often played overly ridiculous characters and it played perfectly into those. And of all the characters to "overact," the Grinch may be the one where it's most appropriate. And he knocked it out of the park IMO.

I get people not liking the movie, that's fine. But you still have to admit that the actors, the sets, the direction, the "feel"....all of it fit a live action version really well.

I might get downvoted to hell, but I think the 2018 Cumberbatch version is the best one for the family. The animation is beautiful, it's funny, the Grinch has a great character arc, and it just feels a lot more wholesome than the Carey one. I am looking at this from a dad of 3 young children, though.

I didn't really like this movie when it came out, and I was a child. Now, I sort of like it? Not sure if it's the nostalgia or what. My family loves it.
