Why do we have ‘move over’ laws for police on the side of the road and not civilians?

Law says of a cop is on the side of the road making a traffic stop on a 4 lane road you must move over to the far lane.

If that law must exist, why doesn’t it also apply to non-cops? The guy changing a tire beside the interstate generally has less control over his situation than a cop and also doesn’t have the benefit of flashing lights.

Or maybe the flashing lights and dark asphalt colored uniforms that most cops wear actually cause the danger for police?

Because it's usually common courtesy, and safety, to move over when someone is stranded on the side the road, you don't need a law for it..

Sorry you need laws for common sense...

You probably drive with your flashers on in the rain...

Harder to enforce?

I do see people get over on the interstate when a car is being worked on the breakdown lane, though.

I don’t disagree, but why have the states decided to codify that behavior for law enforcement not everyone?

A cop’s life isn’t worth more than mine.

First of all, frick you. I was a cop and almost got run over multiple times. The fact that you have to tell people to move over is a sign of this society. You should always move over for everyone or just stop and help them. How about that. Stop and offer assistance.

Pulling up and stopping behind a cop making a traffic stop sounds like a VERY good way to get shot.

Any particular civilian isn't going to be spending a lot of time roadside. Cops pulling people over though, do.

Also... police pulling people over have to pay attention to the driver they've pulled over. I'd argue that their attention is more divided than someone changing a tire or looking at their engine.

Mississippi has signs at the state line saying move over for disabled vehicles.

I have never seen a cop making a traffic stop wearing a traffic vest. I started to assume the vest would make them an easier target for a shooter, is that the case?

We literally do. That’s the law. Move over or slow down for all stopped or disabled vehicles.

Edit:

Citation added for retarded OP.

La. RS 32:125(B):

quote:

B. When any vehicle making use of any visual signals as authorized by law, including the display of alternately flashing green, amber, or yellow warning lights, is parked on or near the highway, the driver of every other vehicle shall:

(1) When driving on an interstate highway or other highway with two or more lanes traveling in the same direction, yield the right-of-way by making a lane change into a lane not adjacent to the parked vehicle, if possible with due regard to safety and traffic conditions. If a lane change is not possible, the driver shall slow to a reasonably safe speed.

(2) Maintain a safe speed for road conditions, if unable or unsafe to change lanes, or driving on a two-lane road or highway.

Fair point.

My favorite is the idiots that almost cause a collision by their desire to "move over" in heavy traffic for the vehicle on the shoulder.

Causing a wreck, rather than passing in an unobstructed lane doesn't make much sense either.

If it's safe to move over, great. If it is going to cause an accident by doing so, stay your arse in the lane you are in...

Cool. Every state has some version of this law though. The fact that you are unaware of this law and thought it only applied to LEOs is disturbing. Driver’s education has really dropped off a cliff in this country.

Yep. Love it when the 18 wheeler going 55 mph jerks over in the lane with cars traveling 75 mph.
