Man we had it made back then. The regular season mattered with even one loss killed your odds, players and coaches had loyalty, we still had traditional confrences. and to top it off Kieth Jackson.

Now the unrestricted portal, NIL, an oversized playoff and media ruined the sport. Its a shell of its former self. Tradition is dead all in the name of making more money for the TV networks.

It just doesn't feel the same anymore. CFB just feels like sterile corporate crap now. Sucks

No they didn't.

Coaches moved all the time for better opportunities. Players would've done the same if the constructs allowed them.

If another team gave Vince Young a better chance to put together a resume for the NFL, he would've left Texas for that path... as he should. College football is a tryout for the NFL.

Hell that USC team was going through the Reggie Bush house stuff at the time.

Reggie Bush not even being on the field on that 4th and 1 was criminal. I don't disagree with Lendale getting the carry there but Texas wouldn't have been able to stuff the box as much if Reggie was lined up wide.

It was nothing like the unregulated insanity we have now. You have teams like Texas Tech and Indiana with billionaire donors who will just buy a new roster of seniors every year. CFB is a fricken joke right now.

Sure, but don't act like the players were loyal because they were stuck.

I’ll never understand why the uneducated give a shite about this.

The only argument you have is it’s created WAY more parity in the sport which in turn does “devalue” the regular season combined with the expanded playoff. But 15 years ago, every body bitched about the super teams.

But the last two seasons have been great. This year combined with all of the off field stuff has been a clown world that makes college football great.

Only the SEC was allowed to pay players. I don’t long for the days of being at a disadvantage

shite was so much better in the era of indentured servitude and blue blood dominance with preseason rankings mattering.

Indiana brought in a ton of G5 players and overlooked guys from major programs. Their QB was a pedestrian .500 QB at Cal. They’re not out here sniping poor Alabama’s best players. Only a Husker ‘tard would find what Indiana is doing to be an insult to the sport.

Didn't Nebraska help lead to this by being one of the first teams to switch conferences?

Better than all that, everyone was watching the end of that game without thousands of phones up in the air.

Look at this weekend. Alabama/Oklahoma is kind of meh. I think A&M/Miami is pretty interesting, but being played at 11:00 am local time. The other two games are garbage and will be over at half.

College Football was at its absolute zenith from about 1998-2010. The summer of 2010 is when shite started to go down hill with expansion/realignment drama. Then you had the O'Bannon lawsuit, the creation of the CFP, the early signing period, and all of the other stuff that has developed over the last few years that has turned the sport into a shadow of what it once was.

I still think that game is #1 all time. Hollywood v Texas (the hadn’t really been pussified yet). Heisman winners and candidates galore. The team ESPN kept comparing to all other greats. Mack finally getting the big win. Vince Young being unflappable and guiding an unseen comeback. The 4th and 1 stop. All of that…in the Rose Bowl with Keith on the call.

One thing people never talk about....usc had a real shot to tie it up at the end with the field goal. They had enough time....but kinda just gave up

Good point. That last play was pathetic. It gave me vibes that USC thought the game was in the bag, and were just stunned when Texas scored on the 4th down. They had no answer in the last half minute or whatever.

They didn't give up, they just ran out of time. Texas scored with 19 seconds remaining in the game. They got on offense with 16 seconds left. Their first play got them down to the Texas 43-yard line with 8 seconds to play. Their next play saw the Texas DL get almost instant penetration which forced Leinart to roll to his left to escape. He didn't let the ball go down field until there was 2 seconds remaining. By the time the pass sailed past his receiver and out of bounds time had run out.

Everything that can have its value extracted and squeezed by greedy capitalists has had the same fate. Everything VCs touch goes to shite. Everything "consolidated" and monopolized goes to shite. The rich keep getting richer.

Yeah but the playcalling was very weak. Not aggressive at all
