Those high QB salaries eventually catch up with a team. You have a rookie contract, then a couple years afterward. After that, you have to have a very talented GM and good, cheap draft picks at other positions.

The Chiefs have also been picking at the back of each round for years. It’s hard to replenish a roster when you’re picking behind 30 other teams every round.
For example, the 2023 draft was thin on Wide Receivers, but the Chiefs desperately needed one. By the time they picked at #30, four WRs had already been drafted.
Two more WRs went early in the second round. The Chiefs had to trade up to get the seventh WR.
