Amtrak's Mardi Gras line. What could be done to eliminate accidents at railroad crossings.

So far, the line from new orleans to mobile is a success! Already fifty thousand passengers in three months.
But also three people have died at railroad crossings.Because of cars running through the crossing when the train comes..
My question is, why can't they move the sensor that makes the arms come down farther down the track? The excuse I hear is the train goes faster than a normal freight train and the automobiles are not used to it.
Or maybe the railroad crossing arms can extend all the way across to the other side of the road. Any of you work on the railroad? Can help me with this thanks.

there are always going to be idiots who think they can beat the train...i'm not sure how that can be "fixed"...

The train honks well before it gets near. The deaths are on the idiots that thought they could beat it. Sorry.

I googled and read an article... it didn't state if gates were absent or if people drove around them.

This isn’t unusual. They have the same problem in west Birmingham. Those Amtrak trains move very fast and don’t seem to slow down in populated areas. They are also much shorter than a normal freight train. People end up on the tracks trying to sneak around the gates, and you know the rest.

I'm just wondering why can't the gates stretch all the way to the other side of the road and not leave a gap for the cars to go around?

Brightline is the same in S Fla. it’s almost like people want to get hit. Drives me crazy.

I was friends with a girl whose daddy was a train engineer and hit a mother and two kids and one of the kids survived. This was a long time ago, but we were talking about it and she was talking about how her was never the same person after the accident. He was still working at the time and this was several years after it happened, but he started drinking more. From what she said, it was a version of survivors guilt. He was aware it wasn't his fault, there was nothing he could have done to stop it, but he was still involved in an event that resulted in a mother and one of her children being killed.
When it comes to the railroad crossing accidents, I don't think it will ever get to 0. There will always be people who try to beat trains. My brother lives near railroad tracks. Well you can directly see the intersection and he talks about it all the time how people hit the gas when the arm start coming down. Its only a one arm at the intersection by his house, which is just as bad as having no arm because people will drive around it, which is completely stupid. You can only do so much to protect people from themselves.

To keep cars from getting trapped by the gates. Say you have started across the gates come down, the gate only going halfway (blocking traffic coming onto the track) leaves you a means of egress.

automobiles are not used to it.

I was on the Amtrak train from Nola to Chicago for the LSU game in Lambo. We were delayed an hour or so because some jumped in from of a train at like 2am. I was awake and went out and talked to the conductor. He said it happens more times than you would think.

I can tell you that two of the accidents I know about that happened west of Gulfport occurred because of drivers making bad decisions.
I grew up 5 houses down from a railroad crossing. I've seen many people do dumber things around train tracks than most.

Yeah, I've had a few family member who worked on railroads. shite happens more than we hear of.
My brother n law told me they had a teen boy try to jump on a slow moving train and fell, got half of a leg cut off. Kid was in shock trying to run on a leg and a half. They had to tackle him and hold him for paramedics.
That shite would haunt me.

Before I was born, my dad had two cousins killed (brothers), their wives, and two of their children at a rail crossing in Hahnville. Happened on a Sunday after they had left church services.

Put up some electronic signage that gives an estimation of when the train will be completely passed. Maybe folks will be more hesitant to risk their lives if they can see the minutes involved.

This is the only way. Amtrak trains haul arse even through towns. The only way I can see is if people physically CAN’T drive around the crossing arms.
However, they are designed that way so if you get caught on the track when the bars go down, you can exit the track.

I’m just wondering why you care so much? Sorry, if people are going to be so stupid to not stop, when the arms come down, then maybe they just aren’t meant to live any longer.
